this is a bit of an obsession of mine especially here in charlottesville. the cost of commercial real estate is prohibitive if you want to experiment and the city seems categorically opposed to small lots and small units that could allow people to start businesses without a huge capital investment

Here's the news report, though my most accusatory statements (accusing MoDOT of negligence) only made the intro for the broadcast. MoDOT had told me last week that this signal was fixed but in the half hour I was there with the reporter, the signal never triggered www.firstalert4.com/2026/07/27/l...

Today’s walk was back to this same spot, as MoDOT assured me they fixed it. This time I brought a reporter with me. We did about 30 minutes of filming and chatting and never once did the pedestrian signal activate.

Landmarks updated me that the stabilization work on the side wall started last week. This was obtained through the LaSalle Park Community Association's partnership with the Legal Services Neighborhood Advocacy group and Landmarks is in charge of returning it to productive use.

Looks like some good news for this 1800s Brick Baller in Lasalle Park that was suffering from demo by neglect. Landmarks Ass'n appears to have acquired it and a permit has been issued for stabilization. nextstl.com/2022/08/demo...

It took an earthquake to get rid of a highway in San Francisco. Perhaps a sinkhole will sink this one. #CitytoRiver

Nice trial run for removing the elevated highway! 😁 www.ksdk.com/article/news...

"If the car is to prevail, there’s still one solution: get rid of the cities. That is, string them out for hundreds of miles along enormous roads, making them into highway suburbs." #stl

“Since cars have killed the city, we need faster cars to escape on superhighways to suburbs that are even farther away. What an impeccable circular argument: give us more cars so that we can escape the destruction caused by cars.” Written in 1973, when the destruction was just beginning.

Maybe it's time we treat gas stations as the public nuisance they are "Three separate shootings in St. Louis on Friday left two men dead and three others injured. All three of the shootings appeared to have happened at or near gas stations in the city." www.ksdk.com/article/news...

Driver entitlement > safety of people outside of cars #carsruincities

I got mad enough about the removal of St. Louis’s bump outs that I spoke to @stlmag.bsky.social about it. I am deeply concerned that the loss of bump outs could turn into a loss of life. Will Mayor Spencer “own this” then? www.stlmag.com/news/bumpout...

Daylighting intersections saves lives. This is the opposite of that. Traffic is caused by too many cars. Next time take transit or use a smaller vehicle. #carsruincities

We need to stop prioritizing parking lots over people. Today, I assembled a roundtable to discuss our Building Up Illinois Developments Plan — and the consensus was that we need to act fast. Looking forward to passing it and getting to work in our neighborhoods.

Parking impacts?! Many of the surrounding blocks are entirely vacant! 🤦🏼‍♂️ “Concerns raised by some residents and organizations focused on outreach and parking impacts, rather than outright opposition to the museum itself” www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/news...

How an electric bike can protect your money as another oil shock hits. The argument for fossil fuels is ending, but so too is the argument for relying on cars for journeys of under five miles. Here's some numbers to convince: www.cyclingelectric.com/in-depth/how...

As a person who lives car-free, the effect this has on me is negligible. And I hope this spurs more people to demand walkable, bikable, transit-friendly places to live. Fossil fuels have always been a threat to national security and our pocketbooks
