This is a good week! On Monday, my PhD co-supervisor @deisseroth.bsky.social was awarded the @nobelprize.org for his work on optogenetics. Yesterday, I submitted my primary postdoc work on photopharmacology, a complementary method that uses light for the precise spatial and temporal release of drugs

Not everyone seems to realize that the origin of the machine view of life is not scientific at all. It dates from the 17th century (Descartes) and it's the expression of a monotheist view opposing pagan views of nature. A living being is like a perfect machine made by God, not an autonomous being.

Across five independent readouts, we establish the method's core properties: dark-state inertness, sub-second to second-scale precision, tunable graded control, and crucially: repeated photorelease over hours from a single injection, despite irreversible photochemistry.

And the method reveals biology that conventional pharmacology conceals: local photorelease of ABT594, an analgesic, in the PAG produced a pronociceptive effect, opposite in sign to systemic dosing. Circuit-specific drug action is therefore invisible when the same compound is given systemically.

Precise control of when and where a drug acts in the brain remains a major methodological challenge. Systemic pharmacology lacks anatomical specificity and can obscure circuit-specific effects. Our manuscript addresses this gap.

We introduce a strategy to release nicotinic agonists at a defined site and time, activating endogenous nicotinic receptors in a behaving animal, in native tissue, without genetic modification.

I did a somewhat deep dive into the recent OpenAI and Anthropic "hacks" for an upcoming interview. IMO, the AI companies are better off running with the "rogue AI" story because the real story is actually pretty embarrassing. Like making your Wi-Fi password "wifi" embarrassing. 🧵

Great news for Sweden (and Europe) if this is confirmed later tonight! #valet2026

Polls just closed in Swedish elections. Swedish Television's exit poll (over 13,000 respondents) has just been released. Left-Center-Green bloc predicted to have defeated Right-Nationalist bloc by 51.3% - 46.8%. Interesting to note: nationalist Sweden Democrats saw vote decrease for first time
