The thing that was ever beautiful about the Internet, particularly, was that someone took the time to post up a sewing tutorial, or correct a wiki, or write down their deep rambly theories about Sauron, or comment on a New York Times recipe with the correct amount of salt.

an under-discussed aspect of AI is that teaching is an expression of care. Every bit of advice or education you get is because someone gave a shit about others enough to share what they know. And so much of this streamlining and outsourcing just feels in the service of caring less about each other

I'm going to go through every story in @unwinnable.com's October issue over the course of today. Before we do, though, let us once again contemplate the spooktacularness of Tyler Pennington's horrific cover art.

This is a weird (bad) movie (that I enjoy) and it should be remembered that way.

Stu Horvath@stuhorvath.com

@nochshorn.bsky.social revisits Practical Magic. "...it is strange to me that it is remembered as a fall-cozy classic, a space that I feel it only occupies being viewed mainly through the clipped and focused lens of social media."

I wrote about how Instagram manufactures coziness out of strange-ass failures like Practical Magic.

It's the scariest month of the year and Unwinnable's murder of writers are here with blood-curdling cultural commentary to turn your hair white while filling your brain with new ideas. Backrooms! Werewolves! Babysitters in peril! Don't miss it! Buy: buff.ly/krs7Gl9 Subscribe: buff.ly/QW6Mdeu

He’s correct on this issue. And when the Jonagolds are done it’s Winesap time baybeeee

Fall is here. So we can finally talk about this serious topic... Jonagold vs. Honeycrisp apples.

Time to share this silly thing again. unwinnable.com/2024/12/06/1...

seems like Bezos got these guys on the phone and asked why after two seasons he hasn't seen them make the LOTR trilogy knockoff he's been paying for www.youtube.com/watch?v=maP_...

I’m not prepared to enviously compare my nascent career to the GIRLS, girls. Unless Jessa gets a PhD and has a kid in the intervening years, and then we’re good.

I could stretch "The Westing Game" to eight episodes EASY. Possibly 10. Definitely not multi-season.

I am now wondering if there are *any* children’s books you could get an excellent 10 hour series out of

Missing half the things on my grocery list, I made a decent substitution for Thai curry paste with fresh ginger, fenugreek and tajin. In case you’re ever in a situation where you have fenugreek but no garlic or onions.

This is a very thoughtful piece of what I’ve been trying to get at in my writing on pregnancy in genre fiction (Link under). Pregnancy is often written about as this beautiful state of possibility, but it is also more of an abstraction than is usually expressed.

The New Yorker@newyorker.com

Binary tests offer an illusion of certainty, but pregnancy is a nonlinear experience, and confirming one is a process of slowly ruling out all other possibilities. www.newyorker.com/books/under-...

… why?

Robert Eggers is set to direct a new film adaptation of ‘ROMEO AND JULIET’. The film will feature the actors speaking in Olde English. (Source: www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...)

My kid wanted to play hide and seek, which was new. I closed my eyes and counted to three, as instructed, and when I opened them he smacked me in the tit.

Phair tries to make SK improv a song about lantern flies.

Doc Ochs@nochshorn.bsky.social

Liz Phair announced she tracked down and murdered a lantern fly before launching into “Why Can’t I” tonight. Lemme tell ya, I have a lot of gen-x affectations but I’m a millennial by birth and I am not above that song.

She did NOT play Perfect World but she DID play Mesmerizing and Divorce Song. I’m happy.

Watch me try to draw a line from Nick and Jess kissing on New Girl to all the strange intimacies of Furious.

Joshua’s column and mine use the same picture and they’re both very good. Coincidence...?

I think there’s a lot more to say here but I’m really happy with what I got started. Also I just want people to watch Meriwether’s shows.

The Mummies & the Puppies have now withdrawn from the Ed Sheeran tour.

I feel like the distain I’ve seen for Choosin’ Texas comes from the name ringing of “take me to God’s country” but it’s a solid jam and not about all that at all.

Do you remember finding out what happened to Peggy for the first time? Oh my god.

Subbing in to teach a class on comics and graphic narratives that starts Monday! 😬 I’ve got the stuff I like, but what would you HAVE to include if you were teaching this?
