I mean one of them is called Chad

There are no countries in the Middle East with names that are difficult to pronounce or confusingly spelled in English. They're all pretty simple. Several are only four or five letters.

She should obviously already have been fired. But Bari Weiss is both a massive bigot and incompetent, so I guess we will have to see. CBS is a disaster.

Justin Baragona@justinbaragona.bsky.social

Hearing from my sources that this "over the top" tweet from Jan Crawford is being discussed internally at CBS. At the same time, as those same sources noted, "Jan is protected by Bari" and has been a very vocal acolyte of Weiss. "She just can't help herself," one network insider said.

It's very sad that this is a microcosm about what's happenign to US science at the moment. And nobody cares to change it. And they shouldn't, it shouldn't take a mass popular uprising to get basic science that we've already bought to be funded.

Paul Voosen@voosen.me

New Horizons is now *three days away* from shutting off its two heliophysics instruments, simply because NASA has not provided the $2M in funding it had promised to the mission last year or this year. There is no science basis for shutting these off. Our earlier coverage:

Stephen Miller said just the other day that all asylum claims are "fake." A couple deported from the U.S. to Guatemala were gagged, bound, and shot dead. Their 14-month old found crying next to their mother's body. People like Miller don't care though because this is the point: ethnic cleansing.

This sounds niche but around 2/3 of Americans live in this zone. It’s at least 200 million people. Tons of entire states and cities are inside it.

Mamdani criticizes Netanyahu. Later, a crazy man stabs a Jewish man and an Asian man. And we get an article suggesting that while one stabbing (dismissed in six words) is just a shrug, the other implicates the mayor. Disgraceful framing. Shame on everyone involved. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/24/n...

Catherine was so talented that she was funnier than almost everyone but also didn’t feel the need to be funny all the time. She was just Mom in Home Alone. But if she decided to be funny, oof, watch out.

James Hell Brooks@kleinman.bsky.social

Catherine O'Hara was so talented she managed to be funny in Schitt's Creek, a show that didn't have any jokes in it

If you watch “The Oner” be prepared. It is one of the most stressful things I’ve ever watched and it is itself all done in one take. A masterpiece.

James Hell Brooks@kleinman.bsky.social

Now more than ever watch Season 1 of The Studio because Catherine O'Hara is aces in every scene she's in.

This isn’t theater. They’re so lame. They want to be Delta Force guys from the movies so bad.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Q: Can you be specific about how many ICE and CBP agents are currently operating in the state? HOMAN: 3,000. There's been some rotations. They've been in theater a long time. Day after day, can't eat in restaurants, people spin on you, blowing whistles at you. But my main focus now is draw down

No. The president is not on board. The whole point is for him to not be on board.

Sahil Kapur@sahilkapur.bsky.social

A potential off-ramp that senators are weighing: pass a CR for DHS (while negotiations continue) plus other full approps bills. “It's an item that has been discussed on both sides,” says GOP Sen. Mike Rounds. But he says a revised deal only happens “if the president is on board first.”

This stuff is new too. It is all post 9/11 and it’s a mess.

Timothy Snyder@timothysnyder.bsky.social

There shouldn’t be a Department of Homeland Security. It’s a grab bag of various agencies under a dangerously murky heading which can and now has been co-opted for a fascist transition. Abolish ICE and redistribute the other agencies.

Yeah people are saying that because they looked at the coverage. Literally not a response

Prem Thakker ツ@premthakker.bsky.social

In today's town hall, a staff member asked Bari Weiss about accusations CBS has become a right-wing outlet. "I would respond simply by saying, look at our coverage. Look at the coverage that CBS News has put out since I started. Look at the coverage of The Free Press," she said:

This stuff is actually kind of hard to predict. NYPD is majority minority and local cops tend not to like the feds much.

"Online Rent-a-Sage" Bret Devereaux@bretdevereaux.bsky.social

Meanwhile, there are a ton of unexamined assumptions about the loyalty of key groups. Local cops may be no friends of protestors, but are they so tied to MAGA that they'll jump on the 30-side of a 70/30 national split with potentially fatal personal consequences? Will the guard? Active military?

He was the lead investor in my company, unfortunately, though I rarely had to deal with him. Guy’s weird as hell.

Jenny Cohn@jennycohn.bsky.social

Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale RTd this thread, which says Trump shld act fast & “Fire people who can't be fired. Force them to litigate. Mass deport people who can't be deported. Force them to litigate. Cancel 100s of billions in funding that are not lawful to cancel & force them to litigate.” 1/

Even after Trump is gone, the world will remember that he threatened to forcibly seize the territory of a peaceful democratic ally, and our institutions failed to immediately remove him. That makes US dangerously unreliable, not just one senile gangster.

My favorite Larry/Steve story is from when Steve went back to Apple. Larry goes, Gil Amelio is saying, “Apple is like a ship with a hole in the bottom. And my job is to get it *pointed* in the right direction.” Steve laughed so hard he fell off his stool.

I remember in “Super Pumped,” Eddy Cue calls up Travis, the CEO of Uber, after Apple finds they are abusing App Store rules: “You need to be in Cupertino at 9 AM tomorrow and Tim is going to sit in and decide whether Uber exists or not.”

Casey Newton@caseynewton.bsky.social

I'm glad to see this pressure on Google and Apple. If any other company was running an active CSAM generator in public you better believe it would have been removed from their app stores by now www.wired.com/story/x-grok...

There are so many stories. There was one where Steve was upset with Palm. Ed Colligan goes, Steve, let’s not spend money on lawyers. Response: “When you say let’s not waste money on lawyers I feel you are overlooking the difference between our respective companies.”

Travis yells, did Eddy know Steve? Why is he here? (Dumb move to bring up Steve in that room.) At the end Tim goes, oh, Travis, just so you know, Eddy knew Steve, and I knew him better than almost anyone. He would have understood you but wouldn’t have liked you very much.

I do think this would be going differently on that side if Steve were still there. Trump would have been scared of him. On the other hand I am glad he did not have to see this.

It is a great scene in the show though. Travis is scared out of his mind. Hank Azaria plays Tim Cook. Travis yells in desperation, what, you are judge and jury and executioner? Tim just shrugs and grins.

Apple is brutal when it wants to be. The supplier NDA they have has a $50 million fine per violation and they enforce it all the way up to just bankrupting the company.

Why do we know this? It came up in bankruptcy proceedings when they bankrupted someone who talked when they absolutely should not have.

It’s even worse than this because he deliberately whitewashes the thing in his inbox and tries to make it sound like they all want these laws enforced legally and peacefully. They absolutely do not. Where is the description of that?

Mark Harris@markharris.bsky.social

What an indecent waste of syllables--three paragraphs of "Gosh, things sure are complicated in this big world of ours and if we could all just sit and talk..." about the murder of an innocent woman by masked secret police. Centrist banality combined with narcissistic I-am-America's-pastor preening.

It’s a ludicrous idea. We were not allowed to accept gift mugs or chocolate when working for the NYC government. Forget about being violent. The standards are higher not lower.

Frey: "I think [Vance] also asserted that because you work at the federal government you somehow have absolutely immunity from committing crimes. That's not true in any law school in America, whether it's Yale or Villanova or anywhere else. That's not true."
