Check out QED’s "Insight Feed"! It comes partly from missing Science Twitter, and partly from struggling to keep up with the literature. It's just the beginning and will keep developing :) (see thread 👇)

Finding the paper is only part of it. QED’s review tools can help you examine whether the evidence supports the conclusion and where more experiments are needed. You can question QED’s assessment too.

No one wants another endless reading list, we want to find things that help us think about our research, and we want to understand it well enough to do something with it.

The Insight Feed is an attempt to recover some of what was useful. It uses your research profile and your activity in QED to recommend papers, preprints and conference abstracts, and explains why they might matter to your work. Sometimes the info you need is in the methods or supps. it finds it.

There’s too much to read, even in your own small field. And some of the work that could change how you think about your experiments comes from fields you don’t follow at all.

Doing basic science is always a great bet. Now that AI is going to try everything that smells useful, it’s an even better bet (especially in biology, where testing an idea means meeting the real world, and AI can’t just try everything)

Mark your calendar! So excited to organize “Frozen Accidents” with art historian Sefy Hendler! Join us Nov 20th at Galerie Colbert (INHA), Paris. Hosted by HiCSA, Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. Please share widely, especially outside your field. Be there or be frozen!!! (see poster & thread for details)

From the marble Michelangelo used to sculpt David to borders between countries, past choices constrain what comes next. The choices we’re making now about AI and energy might become frozen accidents that future generations struggle to change.

Was Crick wrong? Do frozen accidents really exist? What role does chance play, and what would it take to unfreeze them? I’ve organized many conferences before, but I’m extra happy to invite you to this one 🥶. Speakers include Nick Lane, Sefy Hendler, Carolina Mangone and others (see poster).

Francis Crick controversially proposed that the genetic code was a “frozen accident”: a chance choice that became difficult to change because so much had evolved around it. On November 20 in Paris, we’ll explore this idea across biology, art and literature.

🩸🩸🩸TODAY WE SHARE TWO MAJOR DISCOVERIES🩸🩸🩸 1. We peered into genomes and brains of the rare mosquitoes that QUIT feeding on blood and found what biting is built from 2. Humans got rid of isoleucine in their blood, malaria suffers from it, and mosquito proteomes budget for it THREADS>

Our diploid aware genomic language model is out! 1/6) The genomes we train AI models on do not exist. Most genomic language models read a single haploid sequence, but human genomes are diploid.

So proud of our new publication in @currentbiology.bsky.social A wonderful collaborative effort spearheaded by the amazing @ethanewe.bsky.social from @odedrechavi.bsky.social group, with the germline side expertly done by our very own Hanna Achache. bsky.app/profile/oded...

Check out Ethan's new paper on how the brain helps protect fertility from heat-induced damage, now out in @currentbiology.bsky.social! Ethan will be opening his own lab in London in a few months - I highly recommend joining him (students/post-docs/technicians) www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

And feel free to run our paper in QED Science, the review will help you understand it better and tell you all about the strengthes and the weaknesses, including what gaps are left to bridge in future studies

Thank you for doing this! You are tackling a problem without an immediate solution, so things will not be perfect right away, and there will always be criticism. I find the reviews very helpful and also the scoring. Please keep going!

Exactly! I feel at least @odedrechavi.bsky.social is doing something for our broken system. To me, this is also about starting a conversation and thinking what all is possible, rather than it being the final solution. If one cannot criticise constructively, one shouldn’t criticise at all.

Say what you want about AI-review @qedscience.bsky.social, but at least it's focusing on whether you provide sound answers to the questions you ask & solid evidence for the claims you make, instead of judging you for questions you didn't ask or lack of evidence for claims you didn't make...

Check out this amazing work

Dr. Rechavi launched an A.I. tool, and we need to consider it. I haven't yet used it, and I don't like A.I. in some forms (generative A.I., or other plagiarism dependent forms). But I do think we need to test this too. What do you think?

I am happy that many of you are checking your “QED Score!”🖖 There’s lots of excitement, and naturally also concerns, that I want to address (see thread, I have 5 quick points to make):

5. People ask, “Can you game the score by running your paper over and over?” We intentionally scored the papers in retrospect and analyzed papers that people posted on @openrxiv.bsky.social under their real names. We also have protections to try to prevent possible future gaming.

3. People ask “Why did you score just the 1%? What about the rest?” We highlighted the best of the best to be positive, but papers with bad scores are also there (run any preprint and get the full review)

1. I agree no one metric captures everything (and wrote this explicitly here and elsewhere). This is another quality signal to be added to others, including to the critique of humans, when available.
