Remember this tweet? This is Roper from the Strib. He had already written his column on car window smashing when he met with us (at our request hours before his deadline). He’s just written another column bashing me for, among other things, being “academic” and he still doesn’t understand the data.

marymoriarty.bsky.social@marymoriarty.bsky.social

All he had from police were anecdotes unsupported by evidence, all of which were refuted by our data, emails, etc.. His response, “I feel like I’m in the middle.” What happened to reporting? Hard(?) questions to police like, “What evidence do you have to support this?

Tad Jude’s brain started melting about 20 years ago and all that’s left is bewildered soup.

Max Hailperin@maxhailperin.bsky.social

Tad Jude, candidate for Minnesota Secretary of State, was asked about the 2012 vote in which Minnesotans rejected a photo ID requirement. His memory apparently failed him, so he just made stuff up. Judge for yourself.

I have refused to use the term “Somali gangs” despite tremendous pressure. Why? It’s a political narrative, not an accurate descriptor of gun violence, even if it was committed by a Somali youth. Who is driving this narrative? Republicans, the Strib, and police. Brilliant reporting below.

mollypeonies@mollypeonies.bsky.social

DEEP DIVE is up! How the Star Tribune turned Republican “Somali gangs” rhetoric into an election-year crime narrative—and helped give demands for expanded local, state, and federal enforcement the authority of news.

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

Chills. This is 100% on point. There are social workers across the Greater Minnesota who know their local jurisdictions won’t be able to meet someone’s needs. They pull money out of their own pocket, buy them a bus ticket to Minneapolis, and tell them where to go to get help.

David Roberts@volts.wtf

Holy shit.

Just as HCMC takes patients from all over, Hennepin & Ramsey absorb social services costs that other MN Counties either can’t afford or refuse to cover. The places w/ unhoused residents are the places that keep them alive. The places w/out unhoused people are places where they would be left to die.

I don’t like to vote early. I’m voting early this year. “Make a plan to vote” needs to be our collective drumbeat. #IWillVote

Bill Emory (he/him)@oldmanemory.bsky.social

I cannot over-emphasize how important it will be for people to make a plan to vote early in-person this year.

I really appreciate everyone’s passion over city politics, but Frey being removed or resigning over disagreement regarding the management of MPD is a theory that simply is not grounded in reality. (This is, for some reason, a theory that I have seen floating around.)

in july, sahan journal reported that shingle creek neighbors' complaints led to owens corning shingle factory being fined by the EPA by air pollution violations after an inspection 2 months later, they hired jackie cherryhomes to lobby for them isn't that timely?

MPD still can’t answer questions about where all the money went. And now, Frey is directing them not to testify before the Council. What are they covering up? What don’t they want the public to know?

one week ago today, brian o’hara was in front of the minneapolis city council, unable to explain to aisha chughtai why the police department was $20 million over budget this year as she went through line item by line item. and now he’s resigned as the police chief

This is something all Democratic candidates and elected officials should be saying right now. It’s really that simple!

Abdul El-Sayed@abdulelsayed.bsky.social

We're being told that if we sacrifice the rights of some people, then the rest of us get to keep our rights. We all know that's some BS.

I will always stand with my trans siblings. I don’t care if it’s “strategic”, my values are not subordinate to tactics. If you wish there was less dialogue about trans people and their rights, you are always free to *not speak* on the topic, and be the change you want to see in the world.

As a non-binary person who grew up closeted in the high-control Baptist Church, I can assure you that online trans discourse doesn’t even begin to approach cult behavior.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

ever since @eleanor.lockhart.contact pointed out to me that a lot of online trans discourse has the dynamics of a high-control group, I can't stop seeing it. "you can only trust your brothers and sisters in the group" is a tried-and-true social control mechanism

What’s the long German word for the feeling you get when your local police officers (that almost 40% of your tax dollars pay for) safely escort white nationalists and racists through your city while his private security uses chemical irritants on everyone in sight?

Don’t read Frazier's 35.95% as a sign that Hennepin voters don’t want a progressive attorney. The data says the opposite. To start: Frazier finished first in 227 of 394 precincts. Folk: 1st in 74, 2nd in 115, and 3rd-5th in 206 (more than half the precincts in Hennepin County).

In 2018 Irene won a five-way open primary with 33.2%. 8 years later, she earned 55.3% and added 6,923 votes to her Primary total. I’ve been on Irene’s team since the beginning and am so proud of the governing work we’ve done and the coalition we’ve built.

Irene won 55% in D2’s Minneapolis precincts and 56% in suburban ones. She’s the only candidate on the ballot with no significant city-suburb gap. In fact she has no strong geographic correlations with any top of ticket DFLers, meaning Irene has an independent base electorally.

Irene won 52 out of 56 precincts, and the 4 she lost was by a combined 51 votes out of the 29,837 cast in the D2 Commissioner race. In 38 of 56 precincts, Irene won over 50% against three opponents; and in 36 precincts she won by a 2:1 margin.

Irene Fernando won a mandate — 55.3% in a four-way race. And the more I dig into the math, the stronger her win is. To start, she won every city in the district: all four Minneapolis wards, Plymouth, Golden Valley, St. Anthony, and Medicine Lake. 🧵

Bill Emory (he/him) reposted

Feels sus to me that @womenwinning.bsky.social didn’t endorse Irene Fernando when they have one of her primary opponents on their board. Since that opponent isn’t moving past the primary, unclear why they haven’t endorsed Irene who’s done SO MUCH for our community. Surely WW isn’t this transactional
