When I say "this is not good" let me be more specific: (1) this is not good for academia (destroying the current system before it has a chance to reassess its incentive structure), (2) it is not good for science (flooding the gates with ill-understood results and insightless or badly written proofs)

AI is ravenous and is eating mathematicians' lunch. A long-standing problem is solved, others are in its sights. But is this more than just a problem about problems? Here's Fields Medallist James Maynard. Read the Math and AI Declaration by 25 Fields Medallists: mathandai.org

Children with medical disabilities deserve basic dignity and support at school. But private schools receiving public dollars can deny this 7 year old accommodations & push him out. We are publicly funding schools without requiring them to accept the public obligations that come with the money.

For the record: $22 million is ~70 math.PR grants from NSF’s MPS division. Each for 2 collaborators, gives 1 month summer salary, supports 1 grad student for its length: 2 yrs. That’s 140 years: In 7, I can promise substantial progress on SL/Parisi, PHA papers (1-6), PF/SYK<->SYK & quantum p-spin.

I understand that funding bodies want to go all in on AI as the shiny new innovation thing. But if all the grants start going to AI at the expense of everything else then the research sector is going to end up looking like a farm with dozens of threshers hacking away in a field with no wheat.
