There’s also something to be said for pitchers getting “in a groove”. You do see it all the time — starters having a rough first inning and then cruising thereafter. But you can still keep guys in for multiple innings to find their groove.

If a guy is doing great for a bunch of innings, you just don’t take him out. He’s a de facto starter if he throws a bunch of good innings. In this model, certain dominant pitchers currently labeled starters probably end up keeping that position (again, de facto) but don’t *have* to be used that way

It makes a ton of sense. If you think of the basic unit of pitching as pitches thrown and you consider falloff third time through batting order, dogmatically sticking to the “starter” label introduces a ton of non-optimized pitches when you could have a bunch of guys throw optimized pitches

I think the main impediment to implementing such a plan would be psychological. Pitchers have grown up their whole lives believing they are a starter or a reliever. But the Sox have a very young pitching staff whom Venable can mold. They are the perfect laboratory for exploring positionless pitching

Will Venable is a former basketball player, I wonder if there’s any direct influence on his pitching management? Make the young guys forget about starter vs bullpen “position”, just maximize production for the pitches youre able to throw. Seems plausible this game from bball theory.

Hot damn, Colson Montgomery smoked this home run that hit the catwalk at Tropicana Field. The bat speed was particularly insane. At 87.4 mph, it's tied for the fastest HR swing of his career and a top-20 mark since Statcast began tracking this in the second half of the '23 season.
