May as well dive right in. Did you know that dogs in ancient Mesopotamia also refused to drop the ball? According to a Sumerian proverb, “The dog understands ‘Take it!’ It does not understand ‘Put it down!’” Source: cdli.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/artifacts/34...

I got asked a few times how I drew the mosaic. The very un-prosaic answer is: it's just drawn manually, and not even super precisely as you can see here in 100% original size. But it still follows a specific lighting logic (top down), color logic (cold vs. warm), same as the main subject.

My assignment for Winona Nelson's SmArtschool class: Choose a favorite book and illustrate a cover for it. I picked "The Song of Achilles" by Madeline Miller, and my goal was to capture a similar bittersweet tone as the novel has.

Gotcha—let’s dig into that step by step. 1. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵, because I turned you into an amorphous lump of flesh. You’re not just immobile—you’re immortal, and you feel only anguish. 2. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺. That makes total sense—it’s a natural human impulse, and you’ve been through a lot.

I started using single-purpose aliases for accounts with different websites - like, "burner@mydomain.tld" - and it's actually paid off. I just started getting dozens of emails to an account I used for Discord and I can just snip that right off. Also Discord is a train-wreck. I wish it didn't exist.

If I harden the membrane with a collision system I might be able to stop particles from passing through it. I'll need to set up some collision layers and another map, and mark the coordinates where a membrane particle is located impassible to other particles.

It's not right though. The white bonded particles were acting erratically (thnek) and not blocking cells well even when in a equilibrium, so I locked the membrane in place and added a force moving them towards the center of the cell's mass.

I'm going to buy my first hardware synth next month, and I think it's going to be a Moog Messenger. I've heard that's a controversial instrument but it checks all my boxes, doesn't break the bank, and looks fun to play. #synthesizer #moog

Last night I found a gold cup on a dilapidated stage coach and spent two hours falling up a hill trying not to drop it while I returned it to its owner. Then I climbed a persimmon tree and drank mystery soup that belonged to an obscene donkey.

Everything else I worked on this week doesn't lend itself well to visuals. Optimizations for particle rendering because it was just outrageously slow. I separated the display map out to do chunked drawing of only rectangles where change occurred. It's mostly good, a little artifacting to clean up.

Took this from ~2fps to 30fps. It's still a lot of squares to draw for p5 and if they all change at once it chugs again. I might need to change the way I'm drawing things if it gets too complicated, but for a mostly static screen it works well.
