Didn't he have chagas disease or however it's spelled? And for decades I thought. Anyone with a condition that has 'dying sensations' listed as a symptom gets my pity.

I'm reading On the Origin of Species right now, and working my way through his thoughts on species and varieties; I gave myself permission to skim some of the detailed passages because, yeah, it's convoluted, and you can see him working out several thorny issues.

In Voyage of the Beagle the dude whined for like 15 pages about the terrible time he had on a riding and camping trip to the pampas with the gauchos (he REALLY hated camping lmfao) before launched into a detailed reverie about all the beetles he found.

I wish Darwin could have known just how much people in 2026 would relate to him and these awesome messages he wrote ~200 years ago (in addition to the gratitude for all the science stuff of course)

Darwin, returning home from the trip of a lifetime: "How glad I shall be when I can say like that good old Quarter Master who, entering the Channel on a gloomy November morning, exclaimed 'Ah, here there are none of those damned blue skies.""

To feel so discouraged, to sift through a lifetime of tedious data, to have so many people disagree with you, and to keep going... thats why he's such a hero

For most of his life, Darwin did not have his famous beard. In his later years, he got so sick of being recognised, he grew a massive beard so people would leave him the hell alone.
