Stop what you are doing and look at this lovely story. A photography student in the 80s took pictures of punks and mods on the street in Preston. He’s now tracked them down and photographed them again. The pictures and stories are really ❤️ www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I'm looking at a London student guide from 1966 and it's interesting how, at a time we now look back on as being the height of the Beatles, jazz and folk clubs are more prominent than 'discoteques, pop and rythm & blues'. "I found myself dancing to Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball, Alex Welsh...no pop."

Prince Maurice's grave is interesting, because it was a good example of the conflicting thoughts families had. Princess Beatrice refused repatriation of the body. She felt he belonged with his men. But she fought for years for the right to spend her own money on a custom headstone. This was blocked

Reading about the Blue Qur'an today, and...just...wow. Gold Kufic script (likely gold leaf, not shell!) on indigo-dyed parchment (technique uncertain! Brushed? Dipped? Pressed? No one knows!). Written in the early ʿAbbāsid period (ca. 800), place uncertain. 2024 research suggests Cairo or Baghdad.

This means thousands of B2s are written but never read. A true two-stage submission - submit B1 first, and invite only successful B1 applicants to submit B2 - could save scientists (and the tax payer) thousands of hours spent on unsuccessful ERCs. 7/9

ERC’s are made of two parts: a project pitch called B1 and a methodology/feasibility part called B2. Both are comparable in size. However, selection of grants is a two-stage process, where first, only B1 is reviewed, slashing the pool by ~60% - with the new numbers closer to 80%. 6/9

My PhD is likely to focus on the pedagogical value of Wikipedia as a teaching and learning tool, since that’s what the majority of my publications have focused on, so if anyone has any suggestions for unis/research departments that might be a good fit, I’d be very grateful!

Hannah O’Regan reposted

Currently spending my extra hour today researching potential PhD by publication options. It‘s proving more challenging than I thought - many places either don’t offer it, or only for internal applicants, or do offer it but don’t publicise that fact!

Was trying to work out why the dog is so excited. Just realised it’s 11.30 as far as she’s concerned so it’s time for the grand build-up to the lunchtime walk. How disappointed she will be.

My friend Patrick Prominski and I are working on an edited volume on how now-discredited ideas involving biology (widely construed) were used in scientific fiction from c. 1825-1925. If you have any ideas for anything even broadly along those lines, please pitch them, we'd love to see them!

Seasonal ponds here remain dry. Water beetles will be hunkered in tussocks or secreted in their pupal cells. They breathe atmospheric air, they can wait. Some aquatic snails will survive buried in mud. Long-lived adults of some caddis sit quietly in the trees, waiting to breed when water returns.
