Hey, guess who's got two thumbs and is opening to submissions on Aug 24? It's THIS MAG. Actually, I guess the magazine doesn't have any thumbs, but I—JJA—do, and I'm eager to get them all over dem horror stories after 6 years out of the editorial chair. I guess it will mostly be my other fingers.

Outstanding story.

Great, note-perfect story by @ghoulpus.bsky.social, who also has fiction appearing in Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy soon. Stunning detail in the prose! Up over at @reactorsff.bsky.social now, acquiring editor @annvandermeer.bsky.social. reactormag.com/not-like-oth...

I started getting followed by some "film festivals" and "writing festivals" and thought "oh, these are cool!" Then I looked a little closer. They're all part of a network that preys on writers, charging us for reviews, and feeding our stuff into slop generators. So I made a list.👋🏻🖕🏻😠

Thread, and if you are an author who was published by Daily Science Fiction (DSF), which is now defunct, you may want to check if your stories have been scraped and hosted on this new site that is NOT seeking permission and is making itself impossible to contact directly. FINISH THEM. ⬇️

I tried to watch that AI Neill Blomkamp movie and I lasted maybe four minutes, including ADHD induced fast forwarding out of nausea/boredom. The most generic plot (?) thrown together in a soulless slop of audiovisual stimulation. It’s a ‘movie’ in the same way that taking a shit is a ‘feast’.

With PAPER TRAIL, Don Hertzfeldt abandons stick figures for abstraction and paperwork with fourteen of the most devastating minutes of the year. A superb, heart-annihilating achievement. Watch this short if you can!

I love when MAGA types publish a list of unambiguously good things as if they're unambiguously bad things. It's such a revelation of what fearful cowardly people they are. We live in times of radical abuses. We should all seek radical remedies. All I can say to this is Hell Yeah.

Thinking about this helps me (better) understand why I like cenobites so much (‘I just think they’re neat!’), but it’s because I believe I can endure any pain if there’s a promise of transcendence. If I can be changed, fully. It can’t be worse than this (now).

What if you were about to get dental surgery and a cenobite floats in who turns out to be the dentist and is like "WELCOME TO THE REALM OF UNEARTHLY MOUTH PLEASURES"
