one of the more embarrassing strangely common video game fandom behaviours is holding onto resentment over specific IGN reviews decades later. you are 29 years old bro you gotta led the sonic unleashed review go

That’s core to the idea that “game journalists are biased/corrupt” which is core to their entire personality, they can’t let it go because there’s nothing else to these guys

Like they have an absolute deference to authority (while confusing expertise with authority) and a deep misunderstanding of objectivity/subjectivity. Reviews should be objective! My man, you don't even know what a review is.

TBF I'm still in shock that Personal Computer World made Pyjamarama its Game of the Month in Nov 84, rather than Elite. One of the great injustices of our times. An incomprehensible decision.

I sorta disagree, its fun to see an older review that got it wrong, especially with hindsight, and having a giggle. IGN sees some over representation in that, sure, but there was a time where IGN were hitting some real duds, and it's fair to be critical of that/critique it even if it was in the past

I'll add to this however that anyone with real vitriol over a game review from decades ago and actually wishes harm or something like that is less hinged than a sliding glass door

i mean yeah i’m not talking about disagreeing with old reviews when you see them i’m talking about how they continue to hold real rhetorical and emotional weight in games spaces, despite not being relevant anymore and the games in question usually being pretty popular with strong legacies

I totally admit I misunderstood parts of your original post! My bad entirely, I pretty much argued the point of a totally different conversation (And probably clogged your notifications, sorry)

Critique in itself is not immune to critique. We all get things wrong or have some opinions people will disagree with, if we fail to defend, explore, or explain those opinions effectively, or are misinformed in those opinions, it's absolutely deserving of criticism to some extent.

Sure, but "You are wrong" or "this is a real dud" is not a critique. How do you intend to criticize someone who does not like a game as much as you do? Even if you prove them to be wrong on one point or another, did they actually enjoy something that they say they didn't?

Kingdom Hearts 2, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky spring to mind. Yes the takes were bad. Please let it go.

I only ever bring it up cause it's always just kinda absurd and part of why I try my best to not use review scores for any game review I write. I got a small book of grudges but it mostly exists to inform what I do going forward with my own stuff, not to beat the dead horse.

it’s hard. i’m still mad at the game informer review of metal gear rising because the reviewer didn’t understand the parry and it was only a couple paragraphs long and i think they did a big feature review on a significantly worse game that issue but rated it higher than mgr

Nah. I get it. The parry in that game kinda blows to use cuz you gotta MOVE to parry and it's a not the most intuitive thing ever (It took me until moonson to actually make one good parry)

I think it feels great once you get used to it but it was definitely a major hurdle for game critics at the time. I loved the game when it cane out but it was getting absolutely BURIED in game publications and I just never let it down

one of mgr’s biggest weak points is just how bad it is at explaining the parry yeah. but also the game was well recieved largely, and now it’s one of the most popular and long lasting games from its year like you fully won lol. no need to hold on to that review

It was a hurdle for me lmao. I just think they should had allow you to parry without having to move. Literally avoiding over complicating something you can achieve with one button.

theres a game journalist whos usually pretty on point but they said aerith was "child coded" and that people who found her attractive were "sus" like 4 years ago so i still have them blocked

Gamers when a person doesn't like a game they liked A lot of people forget that the reviews are really just like one person's opinion on a game

"how could they give Party Babiez a higher score than God Hand" I dunno maybe Capcom could have done a better job finagling the Resident Evil 4 engine into a hardcore beatemup because that control scheme and camera are straight ass and the game is full of annoying bullshit and has no real tutorial

I think this partly speaks to a tendency in game discourse to treat corporate entities like they’re individual people or even specific teams with a meaningful continuity of personnel and vision, when at most you can speak to a highly diffuse continuity of editorial/design culture.

to a lot of people IGN is an abstracted name for a person who will react to being told of a game review they wrote with recognition and engagement, rather than some people with a job listening to you complain about a slight you perceived two decades ago by someone who worked at the same company.

Still have an axe to grind with Next Generation after all these years. You tried to kill 2D gaming, but WHO'S DEAD NOW?! Ha ha ha ha HAAA HAAA HAAA! ... I might have problems.

I wonder if people will ever learn that you truly do not have to care about any of that stuff you really really don't even if it is someone you respect or enjoy it might be controversial to say but people don't have to read or care about reviews your opinion is ultimately what matters

Like shit reviewers themselves benefit sometimes from not actually giving a shit about anyone else's opinions but their own or going against the grain and liking some true dogshit or something really provocative

When it comes to games (and sadly, this mentality is leaking into all other media) there’s this baseline assumption that if you don’t agree with someone’s stance on a game then you can’t respect them. I respect the hell out of Jeff Gerstman and love hearing him talk about games…

But when it comes to what he enjoys vs what I like there’s almost zero crossover there but that’s what I like! I like to hear what someone approaching things in a different way to me thinks. For some reason our culture has decided you absolutely cannot tolerate this divergence in artistic analysis

I still curse that GameInformer Sword of Mana review for the GBA for praising the co-op mode that game didn't actually have. My friend was very upset with me for convincing him to buy it so we could play together. I will never forgive them.

goomba fallacy for ign. everyone thinks ign is just one guy "why did 10/10 game get a 5/10 but some shovelware got 7/10" youre right. john ign reviews every single game ever disguised as game journalists.

I mean I'm a little bitter about the mostly adoring coverage that Bioshock Infinite got upon release but time as proven my opinion of that game as the consensus so there's no reason to hold any resentment.

it's okay I update my resentment is reinforced with the decades of other generally bad reviews on there, thankful the era where they were one of the main tastemakers for the industry has closed

Prior to 2014, it was a common fan consensus that Ruby and Sapphire had excessive repetititve water gameplay, people pointed to the three water navigation HMs.

I don't remember if it was IGN or Gamespot but they reviewed the Wii version of Unleashed better. I do still nurse *some* resentment for that because it informed my purchasing decision lol

Me and my friends used to get so tilted over this one and considered it emblematic of gaming journalism being an absolute joke back in middle school to high school lmao.

THIS THE GUY WAS COMPLETELY RIGHT THE GAME IS FULL OF STUPID HM CHECKS THAT FORCE YOU TO HAVE A UTILITY SWIMMING POKEMON, AND THE WATER IS JUST BLAND NOTHINGNESS WHERE YOU ENCOUNTER LIKE 3 DIFFERENT TYPES OF NORMAL FISH PER AREA, AND THE ANIMATIONS FOR USING THE HMS ARE REPETITIVE TOO

The thing about that review is that the pithy "too much water" comment is a summation of a couple paragraphs of entirely correct and uncontroversial statements about type balance, HM dependency, and environment variety in the Hoenn late game.

the really frustrating thing about this is wasn't that actually a pretty common complaint back when the original games were new? but now it has a remake that we gotta glaze so if someone makes that exact same complaint we gotta make fun of the wording for some reason

I remember one time the manager who made the key bullet points for the ORAS review basically said that "too much water" was one of his biggest career regrets simply due to the sheer amount of shit the actual writer of the review of the game had to deal with because of it.

a similar behavior i’m confused by is “posting a review score from a decade ago, juxtaposed to a review score from today, even though the games were reviewed by completely different people and several years after passed”

IDK if this is a hot take or not, but when someone does this in good faith, to discuss how media evolves over time I love it. There are cult classics that didn't land at launch, and games that got years of patches to polish them to a brilliant shine.

The bad faith version reminds me of when people use off-peak player numbers to prove a game fell off. Like... no shit the players dropped by X% after midnight, even gamers need to sleep eventually lol.

Not only that. Something I learn is trying to look at the person who wrote it and see what other games they talked about. And sometimes. A person can just not like a game. Everyone is going to see things differently. I try to not hold a organization on a review anymore

If you're only 29, decades seems like a bit of an exaggeration, but... more to the point. I didn't people did this. I guess I'm grateful I never stumbled over this part of the online discourse, but I'm surprised I haven't.

For a lot of newer games it’s hard to find anything that isn’t only user reviews (even for some major publisher releases). Having an issue with a review is anachronistic at this point.

I'm taking a break from a homework assignment where I have to find contemporary reviews of books from 1969 and 1970. Of course this is the skeet I stumble onto lol

That was funny though! They uploaded it because they KNEW it was funny! And people got mad at them anyways!

Oh that’s just Sonic fans in general lmao They complain about Amy actually having depth now, they complain about the shape of Sonic’s quills, etc. I’d say they’re really prone to being ragebaited but it’s been happening for over two decades now.

I was surprised recently when I looked up the metacritic on Godhand, and it mostly got positive reviews from major publications. And a lot of them were positive because "This looks like a bad game, but it's really fun to play". IGN was an outlier there.
