#TombTuesday Small but perfectly formed 🥰 The diminutive Poulnabrone dolmen in the Burren of western Ireland, seen in summer 2023 with an Alpine carpet of wildflowers at its base💐 Did the original Neolithic builders ever think their family tomb would become world famous? 📷 My own

How lucky are we? It's #StuffedSoldierSaturday! Mannequins used to be a museum favourite but, sadly, are falling from favour. Here's one of the best (sadly, now gone): the pre-Flavian #RomanCavalry eques at Corinium Museum in Cirencester (GBR). Disturbingly real if you saw it in the (horse) flesh.

Today we have this absolute stunner: an engraved intaglio with a portrait of Julius Caesar. His head is laureled, and a star on the right over his shoulder (next to a lituus, a curved augural staff) is a symbol of his divinity. The gold setting is modern. 🏺 1/ 1st c. CE. #BritishMuseum 📸 me

This beautiful Roman cameo glass disc portrays a young man in a Phrygian cap and cloak beneath foliage. Given the stereotypical ‘Easternness’ of his outfit, it may be Paris, prince of Troy, and may depict him in his judgement of the three goddesses on Mt Ida. 🕰️C1stAD 🏛️BM 📷mine

Engraving of a fox at Altxerri cave, Basque Country from ~39,000BP. Representions of foxes are apparantly rare in Ice Age art. The cave also includes depictions of bisons, aurochs (uro), reindeer (reno), a wolverine (glutón) and saiga antelopes, and are amongst the oldest cave paintings in Europe.

This rather louche looking reclining satyr has been carved into an inch long agate gemstone. Given its size, the detail is extraordinary. It’s Etruscan and dates from around 550BC. 🏛️📷 BM

Elizabeth Cady Stanton was a primary architect & driving force behind the organized movement that ultimately won American women the right to vote in 1920. She died on #OTD in 1902 & never got to vote in her lifetime. Because of her (and others), we can. #VOTE #WomensRights #WomensSuffrage
