Since 2016, KWTRP has used radio to connect researchers and communities. During our two-day Open Day, our #JukwaaLaUtafiti radio programme listeners met researchers, toured laboratories and explored the science behind the conversations they hear on air. #KWTRP #CommunityEngagement

We're offering a great DPhil opportunity to look at comparing E. coli strain dynamics in gut in health and disease with ultimate aim of developing novel therapeutics. Opportunity to learn wet and dry lab skills including long-read metagenomics, biostastical + ex-vivo modelling. Happy to chat pls RT!

Vapes can bring their own problems, but hard to deny the importance of quitting tobacco, the difficulty of quitting, and that they seem to help.

NEWS: Vapes help more people quit smoking than other methods, Oxford-led Cochrane review finds @oxprimarycare.bsky.social review finds nicotine e-cigarettes are more effective than nicotine patches and gum. https://www.medsci.ox.ac.uk/news/vapes-help-more-people-quit-smoking-cochrane-review

If we say "any read counts" then lots of false +ve. If "only lots of reads" then lots of false -ve. Best compromise is ≥2 reads as threshold. But including number of reads in other samples in the same flowcell as an additional criteria helps exclude barcode crossover.

The bioinformatic criteria that support clinical metagenomics as important as the wet lab workflow, and needs principled approach with derivation and validation to avoid overfitting.

Motivation was that using targeted PCR is limiting, want untargeted approach without relying on many primers. So metagenomics. We used workflow with ONT, 51% sensitive all viruses and 99.8% specific. Can improve sens to 70% by bioinformatics (more below) and to 83% excluding low level viruses.

Detailed reflections: Serious technical limits applying metagenomics at scale. Lots of host DNA, and at scale need multiple samples per flow cell. So often trying to detect a few reads. And combining samples means crossover between samples, giving false positives. Bioinformatics is key.

An outbreak of Mpox is unfolding in Guinea Bissau. Madagascar is also experiencing its first ever outbreak. I would argue that Mpox never left. We have not made the necessary investments in global surveillance and targeted immunization. www.theguardian.com/global-devel...

This sort of work is what public health should be , patient, collaborative, consistent , over a long enough period of time to really see what’s happening ( and a fantastic drop in childhood deaths to boot)

Great article and an important message - there's a lot of emphasis on the next hot new malaria intervention, but always important to remember that the fundamentals done really well can have a huge and sustained impact.

Second snip shows mortality due to malaria. Similar pattern, goes from 0.5 per 1000 children dying per year (massive mortality from one single pathogen) down to no deaths 2021-24. From a major killer to nothing.

So why? Final snip shows, despite climate change, not to do with overall rainfall (panel A), but masses of bednets distributed since 2008 (panel B), more and more use to date, and also drug treatment has improved (panel C).

First snip shows background malaria prevalence in community (panel A) and admissions per 1000 children (panel B). Huge drop from peaks in 1990/1999, to lows in 2008, slight rise to 2014 (we worried about resurgence due to less immunity) but then, unexpectedly falls to nothing in 2021-24.
