Fairly thorough summary… a few additional points , the midge species ( multiple) we think is spreading this ( based on other viruses in this group) prefer biting cattle

There is also a really massive thing not being talked about here in that this group of viruses cause really severe foetal deformities , that won’t be obvious for several months yet and I really really hope it’s just ruminants we will be talking about here

Bat consumption in Indonesia, the cultural factors behind this are complicated but the disease implications are not. Sadly neither we nor anyone else have been able to raise the money to do the other side of this and check the viruses of these bats (and people) www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Want to do something really valuable for conservation? Donate some money to help scientists make sure these guys have somewhere safe. Less glamorous than lions and tigers perhaps but equally important

I spent this week helping translocate some animals you have probably never heard of: Vodjvodina Blind Mole-Rats. There are fewer than 1,000 left: ploughing destroys their habitat. They are not moles, not rats, but are blind! They live 20+ years and need your help! gofund.me/ce3134007. Pls share.

A classic "reply all" hell loop this morning at Notts where a student has accidentally emailed a distribution list with 2400 academics. So far there around 15 people asking to be removed off the email chain, several puzzled as they don't teach practicals and at least one claiming to be Spartacus...

It continued all day - multiple people weighing in to tell people not to "reply all" (while replying all). Someone suspicious that it might be a phishing attack, someone who actually sorted out the poor students problem, IT weighing in to tell us they were sorting it.

And the final glory was an extensive (satirical) proposal suggesting that the university should form a new field of academic endeavour in "Recursive Institutional Communication Compliance Paradox Syndrome (RICCPS)". written in true university management speak style...

Dog genetics for the win again… that toy breeds live a lot longer than giant breeds is unarguable but very cool seeing the molecular basis of this …

Eric Topol@erictopol.bsky.social

Why do small dogs live longer than large dog species, and what is the biologic basis of differences in lifespan and healthspan? Epigenetics. There's a lot in the methylation pattern of dogs to explain this @science.org science.org/doi/10.1126/...

This is a mess… an inevitable consequence of dismantling your veterinary public health infrastructure but still a mess… you don’t need a lab to make the next pandemic just a dead bird being eaten by a small carnivore

Regarding discussions about fur farming, see also recent opinion article in the Lancet Regional Europe: bsky.app/profile/fla-...

Sometimes you just have to get out see your research being used - lovely afternoon at the Melton Mowbray ram sales admiring ram butts and sooo many lots being advertised with their bluetongue vaccination status and Maedi Visna Free status advertised proudly (and we tried the beer festival too)

It will be fun!

The river soar at hathern lock, parts of it are diverted for shipping canals or mill races (as here) and in the 1800s it was apparently so polluted with factory waste from Leicester it was bright pink. Nature does recover given a tiny chance…

Fantastic week at the European Veterinary Microbiology conference last week, very exciting having a record 7 new specialists pass their exams and join us. When I joined 7 years ago there were only 20 of us .. 100 specialists and 40 residents in training now

On top of multiple serotypes bluetongue and schmallemberg this is going to an awful spring lambing / calving in Europe … and in case anyone wants to go on an anti farming rant this one also affects horses and deer too !

Depressing and predictable … ok the disease itself can’t be stopped in wild populations like this ( protecting rare/ critically endangered species is another matter ) but not thinking through public reaction ( and health risk) to large numbers of cadavers has been a continual problem …

This sort of work is what public health should be , patient, collaborative, consistent , over a long enough period of time to really see what’s happening ( and a fantastic drop in childhood deaths to boot)

About time there was a crackdown on this …. At its worst this is preying on the vulnerable selling snake oil . These sorts of pressures from the desperate are a huge part of what medical training and ethics is about … you have to say no a lot. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Unfortunately the 26/27 season has got iff to flying start and the news from South West England is shocking and sickening. By the start of August in 24 and 25 there were no cases in the UK, in 2026 we have over 80 already confirmed with more serious levels of mortality in sheep. Vaccinate ASAP

Philip Thomas@philvet123.bsky.social

BLUETONGUE- THE EFFECTS OF THE 25/26 SEASON IS DRAWING TO AN END AND WE CAN SEE WHERE IT GOT TO LAST YEAR. THOSE AREAS MAY STILL HAVE SOME OVERWINTERED VIRUS AND THERE COULD BE FRESH INCURSIONS FROM ACROSS THE CHANNEL. IT'S HOT AND THE MIDGES ARE ACTIVE, SAYS HE SCRATCHING. VACCINATE ASAP

There would be a lot more of these reports if more places were brave enough to look
