Clearly Serbia and Brazil are the S/B duo of the day but (für deutsche Leser) here’s a little something I wrote on Sartre and Beauvoir:

Sartre und Beauvoir: Ihre intellektuelle und romantische Beziehung sorgte zeitlebens und darüber hinaus für Gesprächsstoff. Die Beauvoir-Biografin Kate Kirkpatrick über bewusste Selbstdarstellung und unauflösbare Ambiguität. shorturl.at/wBlDi

Back home today after this stimulating colloquium in Bordeaux, where it was quite a week to be considering its topic (Thinking Privileges with Simone de Beauvoir). Huge thanks to organisers Lucie Boulay and Luz Ascarate, @ubmontaigne.bsky.social, and all the participants for the warm discussions…

The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.

This was great fun—on Sartre’s childhood and philosophical influences, literature and philosophy, the obligations of intellectuals, the question ‘what is existentialism?’, and more.

“Why would you go to all this trouble, when you could do something that looks even better in five minutes using AI?” “Because.”

Keynote Addresses for this year's conference: Negritude and Ecology in Sartre, Fanon, and Césaire – Jane Hiddleston (Oxford) Will We Make It? Beauvoir and Jeunes Mères – Marguerite La Caze (Queensland) Ontological Pluralism in Sartre and Heidegger – Mark Wrathall (Oxford) 1–2 July in Oxford ...

I enjoyed two years in the Philosophy department at UH and had stellar students there from Herts and the north London commuter belt. This closure of Philosophy and local opportunities for young people like them is heartbreaking.💔

Can an institution that doesn’t teach #philosophy even call itself a university? This is a terrible loss to Hertfordshire and UK #HigherEducation. My heart goes out to staff and students who are affected. dailynous.com/2026/05/08/h...

A couple of weeks ago I gave a talk at the New York Institute of the Humanities about philosophy and the literary forms of biography and commentary (and how I have found Bernard Williams' scaffolding metaphor useful for thinking about both).

There are indeed lots of exceptions. - when the particle is d' (d'Alembert) or du (du Bellay) - when the name is monosyllabic (de Lattre) But even then, exceptions have exceptions (Broglie is monosyllabic – it's pronounced "Breuille" – but nobody says "de Broglie did this"). Welcome to France 🤪
