A strange assortment of knowledge, caprice, and whims. Throw in steel pens and DnD, shake, strain and serve.

I'll make this a table of contents post for my steel pen posts. They seem to be reasonably popular, but I only post them periodically, so they may get buried. Here are the ones I've posted so far. I'll keep adding as I go.
Also, more info in my alt text.
The original.

Thought I'd try something, see if anyone is interested.
Let's look at a single object, humble and everyday for it's time, and unpack some of its context and importance.
This is a "steel pen" from Gillott. They were sold by the gross in small paper boxes.

My neighbor is a professional pianist. Tonight I'm heading over and bringing a stack of old sheet music, mostly jazz (+this news reel 🎶) from the '20s-early '30s that belonged to my wife's grandmother. We're going to drink bourbon and she will try to play the music. Can't tell you how excited I am!
If you're looking to channel your nervous energy or just make sure that we run through the tape this election, I recommend the targets identified by Give Smart -- a good place that ensures you'll get the biggest bang for your buck

one of the most important lessons I learned in my time with the union was that all decisions, and I do mean all, come down to a single calculus: can you make those with power believe it is more expensive to say no to you, than to say yes?
doing photo research for a new exhibit and that is a great Marion Post Walcott FSA image from Durham in late 30s. Nothing says North Carolina like a tobacco auction with a Pepsi logo in background
about a week ago I was driving down 15-501 and saw these signs out in median. I doubled back and pulled off the road to get a shot. traffic was light so I went out to the median but then realized I needed to be out in the lane, so forget that! A couple days later they were gone. Same goes for other
Today it’s magic mushrooms! But not THAT kind. Together with @janetahlberg.bsky.social I have started experimenting with the strange alchemical art of mushroom dyeing and we are beginning to get exciting results. Have a look at this little fellow! This is Cortinarius semisanguineus.
This is such a fantastic photo: "The Witches' Tea Party" but I want to use it to explain the origin of the tall, pointy witches hat.
The real story of this photo:
These are residents at the Hospital of the Holy & Undivided Trinity: an almshouse in Castle Rising, Norfolk, England established 1610.
Really seems like a mask slip moment for the skinsuit set. Maybe I'm built different but I do know 3 things I like about my own kids. Fuck it, I held a stranger's fat little baby for 3 minutes last week and I could easily give you 5 things I liked about that excellent little gentleman right now.
A couple of tough ones today, especially the last one. It was the rare occurrence of a country I had never heard of. I guessed close enough, but it was just a guess.

I have an article appearing in the coming year that traces the origins of technological progressivism to Christian eschatological thought and its attendant racialization in 1218 England when badges in the shape of the Ten Commandments were imposed on Jews. Here’s the conclusion to my article.
Is this the justification/rationale for tech accelerationism???
If the “Antichrist’s arrival is a necessary precursor to the 2d Coming of Christ,” then “[s]hould we even be looking to delay the end of the world? Maybe we shld just accelerate, put the pedal to the floor &… get it all over with…” 1/
I'm thrilled to share my first foray into nature writing.
I describe my travels through Aotearoa New Zealand to see the country's rarest birds—and use this as a vehicle to tell the stories of the islands' evolutionary history and the bold conservation efforts that saved these creatures.

It's only socialism when you tax the wealthy & use it to fund services for the poor & middle class.
Otherwise, it's just sparkling kleptocracy!
Related: Family farmers have made more take-home income than non-farmers every single year since 1997.
Yes, that's AFTER farm debts & expenses.
Yes, Slob Job, Nicki Minaj would make the perfect press secretary. Her husband is a registered sex offender convicted of rape who also served about 7 years for manslaughter. Her brother was convicted of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old child and is serving 25 years to life.

FB memories told me that today is the anniversary of the Edenton Tea Party, which prompted me to post this a few years back. when I was at the Raleigh Women's March in 2017, I spied this sign and didn't think twice. I can't tell how many times I made prints in darkroom of that famous cartoon.
I don't ever do this. I have not accepted a commission in SEVEN years. I might not ever do this again.
But today I have opened up my commissions. There are only 10 spots available.

Picked up a great book of postcards commemorating the “restoration” of Buckfast Abbey Church after 1906; the 20th century building seems to be a dubious reconstruction of a 12th c monastic structure, emptied in the 16th c dissolution, and lost, even as a ruin, by the early 19th century

here's the gang "Fixing West Front Cross." This one looks staged... at left you can see the crow-stone (the uppermost stone in the gable, upon which the cross will be set) hasn't yet been laid but is elevated on dunnage.
My friend Patrick Prominski and I are working on an edited volume on how now-discredited ideas involving biology (widely construed) were used in scientific fiction from c. 1825-1925. If you have any ideas for anything even broadly along those lines, please pitch them, we'd love to see them!
Gardening was always my wife’s thing. I’ve really let the beds go since her passing in May. I’m happy to at last do some clean up. Maybe next year I can do a bit more to keep it cleaned. We’ll see. It’s all part of the transition from “our” to “my” life.

The roundhouse at the NC Transportation Museum has one of the largest working turntables. It used to be you could pay $1 and take a ride as they rotated it around.
