Thrilled to see so many more of you have abandoned the Other Place to make Bluesky your new social media home. I am avoiding all social media right now because making Donald Trump and Elon Musk's every move a major part of my life will make me so miserable I will never get anything done.

I am so surprised at how people are freaking out about a result announcement pattern that is exactly the same as it usually is. Big cities take longer. The west coast is still voting. Turn off cable news.

REMINDER: You shouldn't avoid the NYT election needle because it's behind a picket line (it isn't). You should avoid the NYT election needle because it conveys zero useful information while inflating your anxiety!

Happy #indie review day, this week's review is for Europa. Prompted by his deceased father's journal, Zee travels across the terraformed surface of Jupiter's moon Europa. A device that lets him rocket into the sky and glide back to the ground adds whimsy which is defied by a misanthropic backstory.

playcritically.comEuropa ReviewEuropa’s whimsical movement and watercolor art style contrasts poorly with its dreary and misanthropic backstory.

Happy bonus #indie review day, I finished this Dungeons of Hinterberg review a few weeks ago but couldn't find time to post it. Luisa goes to Hinterberg for a vacation filled with magic, monsters, and dungeon crawling. The setting and puzzles are wonderful. The movement and combat is mediocre.

playcritically.comDungeons of Hinterberg ReviewLooking backwards at Dungeons of Hinterberg, I will forget its weaknesses. When I am playing, they are impossible to ignore.

Okay, I popped into a results livestream to see if this was gonna be an election where we have the results before the west coast sits down for dinner. It's not gonna be one of those elections. So I'll try to concentrate on something else this evening.

It's gonna bug me for years that Echoes of Wisdom has main quests called "A Rift in the Faron Wetlands," "The Rift on Eldin Volcano," and "Rift on Holy Mount Lanayru." That's the kind of thing I would have refused to let go back in my copyediting days.

My office in downtown Portland has told us to work from home Tuesday and Wednesday "out of an abundance of caution," so I guess the threat of mob violence is just a normal part of US elections now.

Well, the Chase bank in downtown Portland has made it clear how they think election night is gonna go.

Oh wait this strike means we won't have the fucking election needle? Bless these folks, they should go on strike in November every four years.

It’s not looking so good for the Needle - a quick report from the @nytguildtech.bsky.social picket line, where unit members are chanting “If you want a needle, we need a deal!” and breaking down how, exactly, their labor powers the NYT Election Night mainstay: hellgatenyc.com/election-day...

They're all subconsciously aware that they can only rally the support of mediocrities, but they can never articulate and internalize that feeling, hence the constant railing against "elites" despite most of them coming from the wealthy and privileged classes.

Guys, not to be a softie, but a ton of people thought this election was over in June. Tens of thousands of us have worked our asses off (for real, not just via poasting) to bring us to tonight, where we are favored on election eve. Now let’s make tomorrow the worst fucking day of Donald Trump’s life

One reason I've been cautiously optimistic this time around is, despite the similar numbers, a key difference is nobody was taking the win for granted this year.

A friendly reminder that we all thought the 2016 election would be a no-brainer. If you're registed, please, don't listen to the polls, don't assume - vote.

Minor point but "half the country" remains a very wrong way to describe close elections. Registered voters are ≈48% of the population. Among registered voters, ≈70% vote. In 2020, a mere 22.4% of the country voted for Trump. Not "half."

You know what's more annoying than people who don't apply alt text? People who act really self righteousn about alt text and treat themselves like a martyr for stepping into the replies to do it themselves. Behaving like a smug, obnoxious little shit convinces nobody. I thought we learned this.

I also firmly believe that we need to crush these people’s spirits into blood and earth, not be *nice* to the amoral supporters of an aspirational gore-soaked dictator

Silly thing to do anyway. The election won't be called until Thursday or Friday at the earliest anyway. If we do know who won by Wednesday, it will be such a blowout that there won't be any protests anyway.

I suspected some of the SNL people didn't tell anyone at the network about Harris' appearance until it was too late to do anything about it. Everything that's happened since has convinced me that is the case.

Grammar tip. Use a hyphen when you have an adv-adj-noun structure like “twice-impeached goon” if the adv modifies the adj. However, -ly adverbs like “obviously corrupt narcissist” require no hyphen. Have a great week!

The New York Times Tech Guild is on strike. This is a media story but also a video game industry one: The folks who develop Wordle and Connections are part of this — and as such, the Guild is asking people not to cross the digital picket line by not playing NYT's games.
