The name of New Mexico is funny because it's one of those things that you'd think is really simple (oh, it's it used to be part of old Mexico, so we'll call it New Mexico!), but it's much more complex
New Mexico as the name for the area predates Mexico by several hundred years!

Here's what happened this week in North Carolina politics. [September 18, 2026]
Postscript: after this video was finished, the Wake County District Attorney announced they're settling with 3 of the 4 special interest lobbyists who worked with Greater Carolina to cozy up to Republican NC lawmakers.
He was actually very clear about what he was going to do. Maybe you should have leveled with your constituents about what you were supporting bsky.app/profile/phil...

Gastonia, where Trump is speaking tonight, had the highest murder rate in the nation for part of the early 80s.
That’s not an important data point in this Senate race. But he obviously doesn’t know or care about crime data.
Partisan gerrymandering doesn't just rob North Carolinians of their political representation. It also fosters dysfunction and widespread political corruption - which is exactly what we see today in the North Carolina state legislature.
Vote Jessica Bichler for Senate District 7!
I don’t understand why Collins asked Vance to take care of the widow instead of asking him to respond to the fact that this unsanctioned war is leaving widows w/o traditional veterans’ benefits.
Political corruption is rampant in North Carolina's state legislature, and it makes a lot of people feel hopeless. If that's you, hey - that's totally understandable.
But you should know that there ARE good people working in our state's politics. But more of them need to speak up.
Stein to Veto Bill Allowing Chief Justice to Suspend Judges Without Pay
GOP lawmakers say the bill improves judicial accountability, but Democrats say it would embolden Republican Paul Newby to target judges with opposing viewpoints.
I dunno how this will go. I think Collins is extremely vulnerable. But nothing has changed in Maine wrt abortion which is when shit actually hits the fan.
But absolutely support putting justices in political ads. Wish it weren’t so
Andy Bowline, the Democratic candidate for State Senate District 31 (Forsyth & Stokes), created this remarkable dashboard where you can break down the new budget by topic, provision, browse appropriations and earmarks, and more. Super impressive!

The discourse around the Supreme Court term would be much improved, I think, if people focused on the center of the Court as being very much part of the GOP coalition, rather than focusing entirely on whether it is or is not doing Trump’s bidding specifically.
Question: do you know who your representatives are in the North Carolina state legislature?
Most people - almost 80%, in fact - don't. That's why we created a source where anyone can find basic information about how our state legislature works: https://carolinaforward.org/legislature

In 1984, two things help explain this. First, we had just been through a period of inflation that was vastly worse than the pandemic inflation, and had lasted much longer. As in, well over a decade.
www.dallasfed.org/-/media/Imag...
Between 1977 and 1983, CPI rose from 61 to 100. That's "cumulative inflation" of 64%.
By comparison, between 2019 and 2025, CPI rose from 256 to 322. That's cumulative inflation of 26%.
And yet, people seem MUCH angrier about prices, and have been for much longer, in 2026 than in 1984.
"In its analysis," Ann McColl writes, "the court distinguished between constitutional challenges 'as applied' in specific instances to 'facial' challenges that raise the constitutionality of the entire system in all its applications." It focused on legal procedure.

By a 4–3 vote, the North Carolina Supreme Court's Republicans toss out a long-running lawsuit seeking to enforce the state constitution's guarantee of a quality public education for all children. The one reasonable Republican dissents, as do the two Democrats. www.documentcloud.org/documents/27...
What should North Carolina do about datacenters?
The biggest problem with datacenters is that they're forcing everyone else to pay more to subsidize their business. Our lawmakers are completely capable of putting an end to the subsidies - here's how.
Update: I'm working on legislation to ban corrupt and destabilizing prediction markets, where insiders who know the outcome (especially in government) can rig the game to favor certain bets.
I want to talk about a dystopian world we are entering - where every moment, event, and crisis just become commodities.
Life stops being something we live, but something we sell and trade. It will breed both corruption & emptiness.

Sen. Cortez Masto told The Daily on Thursday Dems are fighting for ICE reforms in part bcuz it helps them electorally — by changing what "immigration" means to voters.

This is the aftermath of an ICE kidnapping a few blocks from my home in St. Paul—an hour ago. A quiet street full of broken glass and at least three wrecked cars. The target of the kidnapping was taken away by ambulance. He was on a stretcher and covered by a sheet, though a cop said he was alive.
GOP Sen Lummis says she’s changed her mind after the new Epstein revelations today: “Initially my reaction to all this was, I don’t care. I don’t see what the big deal is. But now I see what the big deal is. The members of Congress who were pushing this were not wrong!”
Republicans love adding seats to state Supreme Courts! They've done it three times in recent years. This latest court-packing plan will shift Utah's high court far to the right and possibly flip rulings on abortion and gerrymandering.
Democrats should take note that Rs have deemed this acceptable!
This hasn’t received nearly enough attention:
Republicans just passed a law to pack Utah’s Supreme Court after it ruled against their congressional gerrymander.
Cox could appoint two more justices before the court hears the GOP’s latest appeal to preserve their gerrymander
Wrote about how John Roberts and Donald Trump have turned the Department of Justice into a corrupt mobbed up law firm whose only purpose is to enable Trump’s persecution of his enemies and protection of his allies www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...
I think this is the bell that hasn’t rung. Kudos to them for doing it, I guess.
But the issue is much broader. Everything Trump does is offensive to Christianity. Trump/Miller view Christians as a cult to be led and not a restraint on ambition. So far, they’ve been right.
Editorial in the National Catholic Reporter: "The vice president's comments justifying the death of Renee Good are a moral stain on the collective witness of our Catholic faith. His repeated attempts to blame Good for her own death are fundamentally incompatible with the Gospel."
this isn’t a bad editorial board piece but—no they are not. Law is often quite bad and never coextensive with political morality. You shouldn’t turn your moral sense off because someone found a plausibly relevant OLC opinion. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/03/o...
Even if Vance’s claims were accurate, it’s a losing msg. Only the darkest souls would delight in the idea they got a choice apartment because Trump deported the people. People want to believe they are responsible for their own success.
