Shocking to see this report published on the same day as the UK government approve new drilling for fossil fuels. We need climate action and leadership now!

Out today, the UNEP Emissions Gap Report 2026, with our new chapter (five) on where the world stands across the action areas of the global stocktake, and what we must do, together, to limit exceedance of 1.5°C🧵 Co-led with @sophieboehm.bsky.social and @louisejeffery.bsky.social

Yesterday’s Scottish drug death figures show the rate of drug use deaths among men rose sharply in 2025, following a decline in 2024 although the rate remains below peaks observed between 2018 and 2021. Last year’s fall was welcome, but it was too soon to know whether it marked a sustained change.

Shout out to driver who stopped in my street despite guys with face masks threatening a hammer, to pick up guy & woman they were chasing. We reported to police, who found them all safe. Always impressed by bystanders who take action. His car got hammered but he kept 2 young people he didn't know safe

Good to see this new policy implementation report out. Thanks to all participants + @fionamchardy.bsky.social for leading. Key finding: people delivering services know a great deal about what needs to change. If Scotland wants to achieve policy ambitions, this knowledge needs to shape policy design:

1/ Prevention is often discussed in terms of policy ambition and national plans. Our new report asks: what does prevention look like from the perspective of the people trying to make it happen?

I was privileged to supervise Taya’s PhD a few years ago (total joy) but had forgotten how good some quotes are. One academic says they don’t find qual research 'rewarding' because it's harder to publish in epi journals (whereas I can’t imagine finding publication in a specific journal rewarding)2/3

As a geographer by training, I was delighted the sole interviewee who seemed 'prepared to accept that there are different ways of looking at a problem' was a geographer! Anyway, super-interesting read if you work on health inequalities or are trying to do mixed-methods/cross-disciplinary work. 3/3

It was completely predictable that there would be more far right disturbances on the streets in summer 2026 - just as there were in 2024 and 2025 - the government should have been much better prepared in its operational and political response.

This year’s Programme for Government is notable because it covers the next 5 years (rather than just a year), supported by annual delivery plans aligned with future budgets. A longer-term framework can improve coherence and funding stability, enabling more joined-up action to reduce inequalities.

The attacks in Edinburgh, in which an armed bare-chested white man terrorised Muslims, leaving five people injured, don't feature on a single newspaper front page this morning. Two tier journalism

Well done to the demonstrators who turned out in their masses to counter the far right in Brighton. Good people outnumber these hateful little nobodies and always will.

I’m gonna keep saying this: 📢 Health and science organisations, charities, campaigners, research groups, and everyone: Stop 👏 using 👏 X. Show us you care about the unity of this country. Show us you stand against division, prejudice and hatred. If you stop, the government will eventually stop too.

Northern Ireland, functionally, has no immigration. Net immigration last year was about 8000 people in a population of 2 million, and that was a record.

Really? That is your view? Really?

Having spent the day, much like every other day at present, listening to journalists and broadcasters restate unsubstantiated claims, and elide the fact of difference with a trigger for racist violence, here are simple rules even Chris Mason might grasp. ⬇️

It seems obvious but needs saying that most of Labour's core vote is fundamentally opposed to the far right. Failing to fight back against it rioting on Britain's streets will leave many of those supporters wondering what the point of having a Labour government is.

Why is The World At One reading out Rupert Lowe's posts on the Northern Ireland attack, at the start of the bulletin? He leads a party that is polling at about 3%. This is not about "censorship": it's about the choices media outlets make concerning which voices to amplify.

The Palantir manifesto understands technology as a means of organising the state in defence of a racialised civilisational project. So who will these systems serve, how are they to be governed and held accountable? It's the old dream of technology in service of power: bsky.app/profile/scot...

The May election suggests alcohol has slipped down Scottish policy agenda. Despite remaining a major driver of preventable death & social harm, most parties said little about prevention.
