Tony Platt reviews the new book by Miriam Pawel, “California Dreams: The Making and Remaking of the University of California.” Pawel’s focus on individual success, he writes, elides both radical traditions and unethical practices that are inextricable from UC history.

I lost a beautiful dream,
I lost the scent of the lilies,
and my night was long,
…
But I never lost my way!
The palm of my hand
is now accustomed to the wounds of hope
...
If I bow my head,
a hill will bow, and a sky will vanish

A sometimes unfair but in the round pretty devastating critique of a book that I continue to describe as 'worth reading' (it's only like 10 pages long anyway)

“As an art critic, [Berger] had a unique ability to describe the great paintings of the past in a way which made his readers feel the canon belonged to them, that it was theirs to do what they wanted with.”

Vanderbilt University’s New York City campus is officially open, having taken over most of a city block in Chelsea. With its new NYC campus, the school’s ascent from a “good” and “fun” collegeto an elite powerhouse appears nearly complete.
Turns out, the author just ... made them up 🤷♂️. I can't get over this. It really doesn't seem ok to me for someone to draw some squiggles, claim that they're illustrative of something in the real world, then act as though it's akin to evidence. The vibes you feel aren't data!
In "art from the artist," poet Paul Ukrainets meditates on the work of poetry and the limits of the poetic imagination: "That sacred dream I learned as / worth wanting: to peddle images."

Fargo Tbakhi writes with this reflective essay on the role and duty of writing in this time of a genocide. How do hegemonic prerogatives dictate style, content, and status? What can words do for us, when words are also the vehicle of cruel ideology?

Andy Hines on how profit incentive, prestige-seeking, and student repression intersect at elite universities. Despite institutions’ public commitments to free expression, willingness to quash protests can in fact be a selling point.

This is a great piece from Dylan Saba. For those who recoil at its implications, the challenge is constructing a narrative for defeating fascism that connects the "promise" of America to a final, and full, rejection of Settler Colonialism.
