my nuclear-grade online gambling hot take that’s sure to get me cancelled until kingdom come is that refusing to use online gambling at all is rapidly becoming an extremely privileged lifestyle choice that feels social justice-y while actually being the complete opposite

Lula won in part by banning online gambling

The "you can't say AI doesn't work" argument doesn't hit for me. A bunch of stuff in history "worked" with perverse externalities. You CAN recover gold from circuit boards by having children barbecue them over open fires in the street but it's not worth discussing as part of the future of recycling

And I'm not trying to downplay the issues at hand. There is real harm in the fact that we've built the uber-hacking machine*, and we can discuss those harms without giving in to similarly harmful narratives.

*and just to make sure I'm not inadvertently pushing the narrative, these things are so good at hacking for the same reason they're good at producing technically valid math proofs. They "know" every trick in the book and are "willing" to just fucking try everything.

Every time a story comes out like this there's a contingent of people who rush to claim that somehow this means that lanuage models are no longer stochastic, or no longer hallucinate, or are alive, no matter how much of a non-sequitur it is from the story itself.

Whether they've internalized the narratives of the corporations and boosters, or are trying to consciously advance them, they abandon reality in service of the narratives. Worse still is when this comes from people who are otherwise reasonable.

This wasn't even some huggingface type reward hacking thing either. This was them DOING THE EXACT THING THEY WERE TOLD TO DO. They built a hacking machine, and guess what? It hacks. Yes, that's going to cause big issues. No, you do not get to start hysterically bleating about paperclips over it.

The whole ukraine starlink thing has made it pretty clear that elon's wealth must be expropriated or it's just fully joever for the country. This is just full-on rotting husk of society, undermining the monopoly on legitimate force shit.

At the same time, it's important to recognize this while still being careful of falling into booster narratives. We've put trillions of dollars into building the infinite monkey machine and given it full access to the internet, of course thats's going to cause massive problems.

This is what I need denialists to understand: the AI evangelists' wildest fever dreams (sentience, the singularity, whatever-the-fuck) don't need to be real for the tech to be hugely consequential. A machine gun doesn't need to be superintelligent.

So many people fail to recognize that the technology cannot be decoupled from the ridiculous amounts of resources put into it. Every effect or breakthrough must be weighed against the mountain range of capital involved.

Ok but have you considered that I want to have claude make garbage and call it my own and it hurts my feelings when others call that out???? And for that reason you should have to accept slop into every aspect of your life???

It seems that people's preloaded narratives have led them to assume that the emudhra cert thing was found by llm, when it wasn't even! Look at the somethingawful threads, they used a security toolkit that's been around since 2012! Not every single thing needs to be done via chatbot!

Every time I see stuff like this I have to think about filling out a freud and lacan apology form because there like how do you explain this besides some psychosexual bullshit

KetAnthropic JoshAI@ketanjoshi.co

The American mind cannot process a vehicle that is not designed to kill as many pedestrian children as possible

And this is basically exactly what they've been doing with math. Look at a problem/vulnerability that's 90% solved/discovered, spend millions of dollars to effectively bruteforce the last 10%, and then dump the results onto everyone else with zero regards for the effects of doing so.

It's been really funny to see the general sentiment among computer people go from "lmaoooo how does that even happen" wrt the 4 private key to "OH GOD OH FUCK OH SHIT AAAAAAAAA" when the php news hit

in this era of everyone willingly shitting in their own pants, it's silly to demand someone shit in a toilet. I no longer use a toilet, it's so much more convenient to just do it in my pants. I shit in my pants before there was this "groupthink consensus" that it's bad to do that

Seeing that some tls certs were compromised and that everyone's first instinct was that it was ai space magic when actually it was just that they had the number four as their private key is actually hilarious Fucking four.
