A reminder, because it is almost that time of year: More children are killed by cars on Halloween than any other day of the year, by far. www.vox.com/future-perfe... If you're a parent, I hope you'll do what you can to keep kids safe. If you're driving on Saturday, PLEASE exercise extra caution.

New Jersey can make application processes simpler, reduce paperwork, and provide temporary coverage for people who lose Medicaid. “New Jersey still has time to build a system that catches people before they fall through the cracks," said report author Jen Spiegel. www.njpp.org/publications...

In the bad old days (this is FY2019's end-of-year summary), more than 1/5 of the NJT operating budget was capital transfers! And unsurprisingly, if you raid capital for a decade, the next decade has reliability issues. Who knew?????

Peter Chen@ptrchn1.bsky.social

NJT's low subsidy ended up with the agency raiding capital budget to pay for operations for YEARS. Guess what happens when you neglect long-term maintenance and equipment replacement? Also note the budgets have no inflation adjustment. 2024 budget is LOWER than 2020 when inflation adjusted

"It found that although NJ Transit's operating budget increased from $2.39 billion in 2020 to $2.86 billion in 2024, service reliability deteriorated based on the number of miles a rail car travels before it fails." whyy.org/articles/amt...

There are operational issues at NJT beyond funding sufficiency alone. But acting as though "money can't fix NJ Transit" ignores that lack of money is what caused many of NJT's current woes in the first place.

To the extent there is polling on this, lgbtq+ identity is a very small chunk of the overall reasons why people cut off parents, with abuse, manipulative behavior, and other interpersonal conflict making the bulk of the reasons

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

This has been a slowly metastasizing moral panic for years: Liberals, drunk on therapy-speak, are cutting off their parents over minor slights and miscommunications. There is little evidence of the underlying phenomenon and even less of the cause. Look at this egregiously thin nut graf.
