Ada Lovelace Day@adalovelaceday.bsky.social

Ada Lovelace Day is coming up again on 13 Oct and, as you know, these days it is almost entirely unfunded. I've been invited to speak at or attend a few events, all of which I've said yes to because the mission won't further itself. I'm also still writing my report...

In case you missed it: last night, CBS News awarded the Mike Wallace Memorial Scholarship to Santiago Campos, a high school journalist. In accepting, he took the time to condemn the direction of CBS News to much surprise and applause from the audience.

Forty years ago, on this day (Mar 17) in 1986, I stood on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise-A at Stage 9 at Paramount for the ending scene of Star Trek IV. James Doohan asked me if I'd made all the control panels green in honor of St. Patrick's Day. I still regret not saying, "Yes!"

President Occasio-Cortez is what the world needs America to choose.

Vice President JD Vance gets roundly booed at the opening ceremony of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympics. "Those are a lot of boos for him, whistling jeering," says the presenter. US athletes receive a warm welcome from fans, though.

A key figure in US politics that I think a lot of European observers obsessed with MAGA voters haven't really got their heads around is your average boring middle class suburban voter who in the face of incomprehensible reactionary chaos hankers after a Normie Revolution.

Here's a photo of my friend and colleague, Jorge Bautista, getting shot in the face with a flashbang grenade. The ICE Agent is so afraid of Jorge (who was posing no threat) that he has wet himself. Please share this photo. Everyone needs to know what cowards ICE agents are.

I’ve seen just one counter-protester at No Kings San Diego. He’s got a Trump 2024 flag and this guy has been following him around for probably an hour playing Benny Hill and circus music.

Following a rich white man to war because you didn’t like the sound of a black woman laughing will go down in American history as one of the stupidest things ever.

Just shoot a reporter on live TV, what can possibly be wrong with that?

Watch the slow motion: it appears to me that the officers discuss the photographer and reporter before the one on the end fires on them (it looks to me like he's aiming at the camera, not the reporter, but you decide)

Monica Isham is the 1st woman & 1st minority to serve as a circuit court judge in Sawyer County. In an email to all Wisconsin state judges she said: “If there is no support for us, l will refuse to hold court. If this costs me my job or gets me arrested, then at least I know I did the right thing.”

BUT THERE'S MORE: After declaring that both the wife and husband are not in Tren de Aragua and must be released, Judge Briones SPONTANEOUSLY (without being asked) issued an injunction blocking the use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport anyone in the Western District of Texas without 21 days notice!

I remember playing Star Trek 25th Anniversary in 1992 and Star Trek Judgement Rites in 1993. I’d really like to see this material released as a game or as a photorealistic rendered film.

Do you know that 28 years ago D.C. Fontana wrote an immersive Star Trek game and the entire Original Series cast got together for the last time to record the massive amounts of dialogue? And they were directed by John Meredyth Lucas? And Interplay has just been sitting on it this entire time?

The only thing she’s right about is that it’s an “incredible plan” because indeed it lacks credibility.

Bondi is escalating the rhetoric against Abrego Garcia, who she calls "one of the top MS-13 members" and "a terrorist"

Seems like it would be handy to codify a restriction on governmental interference somewhere, maybe close to the other nine things the US government is barred from doing, like curbing citizen’s rights to carry firearms. Just an idea in case you don’t like the sound of “political commissars vetting”.
