I have to say I take the opposite view. If something doesn’t serve the story it’s padding, and a writer should be better than that. The story is everything. Supply chain infrastructure is unlikely to be necessary unless, for instance, its breakdown is plot relevant. Otherwise I’ll take it as read.

The adage that extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof still applies. We might not be able to disprove the “theory” that we’re not the first advanced civilisation, but there’s zero evidence for it. So, in the absence of evidence, go with the explanation that requires it least.
