25 Oct 1812 // 38-gun frigate HMS Macedonian was captured off Madeira by American 44-gun frigate USS United States. During the battle the British frigate was overwhelmed by the more powerful and longer-range guns carried by her opponent. She was almost fully dismasted in the first exchange of fire.

Halsey's personal papers include a copy of the letter he wrote his wartime chief of staff to state his desire to put Samuel Eliot Morison's "cojones in a vise" for blaming him for San Bernardino Strait.

…although Halsey’s decade long campaign after the fact proclaiming he did nothing wrong did more than anything to mire the battle in controversy even though from the Japanese perspective, Shō-Gō 1 was, in the words of historian Paul Dull, “an exercise in utter stupidity”

18 Oct 1812 // 18-gun brig sloop HMS Frolic was escorting a convoy to England from the West Indies when she was damaged by a gale north of Bermuda on 16 October. The gale also scattered the convoy. While repairing the damage and re-forming the convoy early on 18 October she sighted a strange sail.

11 OCTOBER 1776, BATTLE OF VALCOUR ISLAND: As the sun sets, Benedict Arnold orders the American fleet to withdraw before the British destroy it completely. By now, they’re taking fire not just from the British ships but from Native musketeers onshore on both sides of the channel.

In the regular season the White Sox won ten more games than they should have, probably. They were always likely to run out of gas in the playoffs but they went deep, and it's a hell of an achievement.

We are saddened to say goodbye to our dear friend, Oscar-winning actress Eva Marie Saint. One of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age, we’ll forever be grateful for unforgettable contributions to cinema, her generosity and her humor. Our thoughts are with her loved ones.

Fun fact, the Wasp’s landing signal officer was none other than David McCampbell. After the sinking, he was sent back to the states to form Fighting Squadron 15, who would go on to destroy the most Japanese planes of any squadron in the war producing 26 aces. Quite the boomerang

On this day in 1942, the Japanese submarine fires a salvo of six torpedoes at the US carrier Wasp. Two of the torpedoes hit Wasp, causing internal fuel explosions and fires, leading to her sinking. (1/2) #NavalHistory

The Giants 90% 3rd down conversion rate (9/10) would be tied for the 2nd-highest by an NFL team in a game since 2000. Only 1 team ever finished with a better conversion rate on 3rd down in a game this entire millennium.
