Thread of photos illustrating THE HARDEST PLACE, sorted by chapter: If you took one of these photos, let me know! Most were shared with me by unit commanders as part of big dumps of deployment photos, but I’d love to credit the individual veterans who took them.

My Afghanistan war book THE HARDEST PLACE is approaching its four-year anniversary. Since I’ve mostly migrated from Twitter to Bluesky, over the next few months I’m going to recreate here a long thread of photos that many readers have enjoyed scrolling through as an accompaniment to the book.

I mean, when’s the last time we discussed the architecture of Five Guys? It would be better if Five Guys was full of bejeweled columns and bas-reliefs depicting monstrous serpents. We should fear the Five Guys are five heads on one chthonic entity

This long Der Spiegel piece interviewing 10 IDF Gaza veterans does a remarkable job describing in detail from a first-person perspective the looseness of ROE, especially during the opening stages of the war, both for air strike cells and ground forces. But I don't see an English translation, so...

This soldier describes "retroactive incrimination" where justifications for strikes were manufactured after the fact, in this case the Reuters camera crew killed by tank rounds in Aug 2025, who she believes were actually killed *because* they were journalists, not mistaken for Hamas observers.

More about "mosquitos" from this soldier, who says a special unit of Arabic-speaking soldiers ran them. He also talks about the influence that fundamentalist religious soldiers and commanders had on pushing units' limits of what was acceptable and advocating for widespread destruction of homes.

This soldier describes much the same thing as his unit demolished the Netzarim Corridor, as well the ways some soldiers and junior commanders would describe who they were seeing so as to be sure they'd receive authorization to shoot (even if a drone operator was contradicting them):

This soldier says that in his unit during the opening weeks, they were told to "shoot anyone you see," up until the Dec 2023 incident in Shejaiyah where these orders led to the killing of 3 hostages who were mistaken for Gazans with white flags. He also talks about the use of "mosquitos"...

This soldier who entered Gaza during the initial Oct 2023 ground push confirms what Haaretz first reported a few months later: that once the IDF declared neighborhoods evacuated, it was common for them to be treated as free-fire zones where all "military-aged men"—or even all people—were to be shot:

...here's a translation. There are two accounts of the 31 Oct 2023 Jabaliya strike on Hamas battalion commander Ibrahim Biari that killed 100+ civilians, which one says had to be authorized by the IDF chief of general staff—Gen. Herzi Halevi—because it was expected to harm as many as 300 civilians.

What do you think is inside Liberty Biberty, if you chopped it open? What’s the bone structure, and if it’s just a skull, where are the other organs besides the brain? What would be the best cuts of meat?

You can find lots of internet art addressing this question with regard to Minions, all of which seems downstream, to me, of how Shmoos were said to work in Li’l Abner

Laith al-Khazali being named Iraq’s deputy prime minister immediately after the final US withdrawal feels like a grimly symbolic representation of who really won the war. In 2007, while advised and supplied by the Quds Force and Lebanese Hezbollah, Laith famously was captured by JSOC and proved…

Details from Michael Gordon’s THE ENDGAME on Daqduq's role as Hezbollah advisor to AAH founders Qais and Laith al-Khazali and his 2007 capture and interrogation—during which he played mute to disguise his Lebanese accent for long enough for other operatives to get to safety.

There are some Trump administration Iran hawks with experience from 2005-8 Iraq when Iran was using groups like Laith’s AAH to kill US soldiers who must be going absolutely apeshit over this news.

Just when you think the old GWOT State Dept crowd at the Iraqi-American owned DC bar “Green Zone” has been entirely displaced by hip leftist zoomers who don’t remember what the Green Zone was, you walk by and hear some guy throwing around the phrase “foreign national” like old times. Refreshing!
