Composer and audio programmer // music lecturer at SUNY Geneseo
I also like TTRPGs, fountain pens, mechanical keyboards, weird fiction, and I'm getting into analog photography
@scorefollower.bsky.social shared one of my pieces!
It's for trumpet, trombone, percussion, and MIDI keyboard w/ Max/MSP, and it's got microtonal brass, glitchy noise, and cheesy DX7 sounds

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.
I don’t think banning (traditional) frats will magically “fix” anything overnight—and there’s a lot it doesn’t address.
But when so much SA is centered around one specific area of campus life, it’s worth taking about #cornell
Any idea why an artist would be listed twice in an Android media player?
Some of the ones I've tried don't list it twice (Musicolet, Auxio, VLC) and some of them do (Gramophone, Fossify). It's always the same albums listed in each group, too.
I double-checked the metadata using both the Apple Music app on my MacBook and Picard, and all of the tracks have the same track/album artist without any extraneous characters.
I wondered if Autechre titles would give anything funny and some of them work surprisingly well (/terrible):
Reniform Puls in My Pants
Eidetic Casein in My Pants
Outpt in My Pants
Stud in My Pants
Drane2 in My Pants
If you want to be a successful experimental music composer, you need to have a funny catchphrase like “It’s gonna rain!” or “I’m sitting in a room!” or “She was a visitor!” that you can yell out when you walk into a party or when someone asks you a tricky question you don’t know the answer to.
Felt the need to add an AI Policy page to my website. It should be obvious but I am firmly against the use of LLMs and want to make it clear that training them on my site's content is something I don't want.

I am a type 1 diabetic, and last night Dexcom forced me to agree to a new terms of use in order to continuing using the app and view my blood glucose data.
Glad I had the foresight to "view agreements" and then copy the entire document. Because there appears to be NO WAY TO VIEW IT AGAIN. And...
I spend 90% of my week reading financials, analyst notes, earnings and all sorts of serious stuff, so this is the only kind of video I can watch on the weekend
I would probably get a private airplane — something 2-seater and propeller driven so I could putter around the sky, and maybe bring a friend or my partner
I've been watching Xyla Foxlin build a classic Pietenpol; it could also be cool to get the supplies and tools needed to build instead of buy
We applaud our colleagues’ brave decision to form the @inlocalnewsguild.bsky.social guild, and we call on their management to reverse course and swiftly recognize their union.
We have an unfortunate update. Free Press Indiana CEO Bro Krift has informed us that FPI will not voluntarily recognize our union.
While this is disappointing we are confident should we go to an election that the union will succeed.
I’ve been biting my tongue on this one. But I’m just going to come out and say it:
The Sexual Citizenship approach is the next era of symbolic compliance for campus sexual violence.
It’s trying to solve sexual violence by putting more chairs in dorm rooms. Literally.
My very fav young journo + the ever brilliant Shamus Khan & Jennifer Hirsh on why our rage at Cornell & the world is right and how it can be put to good use to make this “the last Jane Doe.”
Shrug. “What can we do? Without ‘proof’, it’s he said-she said.”
Well, actually - we could get rid of fraternity housing on college campuses. That’s something we could do.
It is wild to me to watch Hirsch and Khan dance around fraternities in the interview I quoted.
It is a tell that they’re advocating for rebuilding schools from the ground up—with the exception of frat row.
By the way, a bill has been repeatedly proposed to allow students taking a leave of absence after sexual assault to defer making student loan payments.
It can’t pass the Senate.
Student debt is at the heart of why campus sexual violence derails victims’ lives too.
The primary reason victims drop out of college is because they are encouraged to take temporary leaves of absence—and then they can’t return until they are current on student loan payments.
An acquaintance is being sexually harassed at this job. I see him about once a week and ask how it’s going. Today he confessed, he can’t afford to leave because of his student loans.
The point of debt at a national level, at an indivisible level, is docility. It’s capital’s greatest asset.
> [The bill] would repeal the Homeland Security Act [which] created DHS and led to the establishment of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The final missing piece: Beads, the gorgeous "texture synthesizing" granular processor and oscillator and sequel to Beads, is now open source (MIT/CC).
And it's code from a time when code was written by humans for other humans to read. Ahem.
It’s time to call The Boston Globe’s viral lesbian bar story what it is:
a thinly-veiled far-right smear campaign.
Read my commentary for free, only on The Backbone News.
I spoke to @kattenbarge.bsky.social about the media coverage of “inconsistencies” in Jane Doe’s case, as well as my own experience with USA Today misusing my words in a story smearing her.
As always, Kat understands the way victims are punished from coming forward. This article is a must-read.

> According to a longitudinal study by the NIH published in 2022… researchers found that frats cause rape. […]
> Another study, published in 2007, found that fraternity members are THREE TIMES as likely to rape as other men on college campuses.
Corruption and inaction are the norm in campus policing--even beyond what you think you already know about other police agencies.
There is good reason that people are calling for the abolition of campus police departments specifically right now. They maintain an elite lawlessness on campus.
There are unique dynamics in campus police departments that present very specific problems. Including:
- Their conflict of interest as university employees hugely guides their judgement.
- University police departments often hire the police that other police departments let go.
Kate Manne wrote another brilliant essay about the Cornell case. This time, it's about her own experiences interacting with Cornell's police department.
Which brings me to the other big variable: mandatory reporting policies.
If a school has an expansive mandatory reporting policy, then they have more reports made about survivors than by survivors—including multiple reports about the same incident.
One of the biggest ones is trust in the Title IX system. A school with a really low reporting rate isn’t necessarily a place where violence doesn’t occur, but rather a place where students know they will be mistreated if they come forward.
There are some news articles going around about sexual violence reporting rates at different universities.
Let’s talk about why some schools have higher reporting rates than others:
Wow. I hadn't actually read the NYT story yet when I wrote this. But what actually happened to Jane Doe is the exact kind of thing that I'm talking about in this thread.
All of this. I also want to add that, in my research, I found that a lot of “inconsistencies” in a victim’s story actually came from gender bias affecting investigators’ record keeping and interview methods.
Just a reminder that people don’t always realize they were raped in the immediate aftermath. It can take hours, days, months, and even years to realize you were raped, and it doesn’t make it any less true. There are many kinds of responses, including fawning and trying to appease your rapist
The guest's suggestion was that Dems should support trans rights, but "quietly" -- don't make a big deal out of it.
Really? What a low bar. Why not call on Dems to create messaging of solidarity and inclusion, to show that we can and should care about EVERYONE, and

Third, there's a horrible citizens initiative on the ballot in WA state this year that will blow up all of girl's sports in the name of keeping trans girls out. Every single girl will have to prove girlhood through invasive exams or expensive blood tests ... just to play sports.

Thrilled to see my article on unison openings in (digital) print! mtosmt.org/issues/mto.2... I started keeping this list back in my composer days (circa 2018?), and once you know it's there, there's a lot of contemporary music to find these sorts of openings in.
There seems to be a coordinated talking point among the EA folks that the "standard" approach to "AI" on "the Left" is "AI is just stochastic parrots so no need to worry about it".
(Sorry for all the scare quotes, but y'know)
>>
... and much, much more from MANY voices. When the EA claim "no one has been warning you about this stuff" they are doing a double erasure:
1) Of the people doing the warning
2) Of the actual harms they are warning about

But the insidious thing is that the argument seems to be: No one has been telling you to worry about this stuff/you're all asleep at the wheel! (And they've caught Bernie with this, among others.)
