This piece cuts to the heart of a massive problem. I spent much of the last year battling scammy fundraising texts on my elderly mom's phone and honestly haven't contributed anything to any politician this year because I've lost so much trust due to this fundraising machine.

Just as a private equity firm buys out a corporation and strips it for parts, a consultant class is raiding the Democratic Party and getting “generationally wealthy” along the way New from me and @adambonica.bsky.social newrepublic.com/article/2163...

I wonder if it's possible to successfully argue that models with GPL code in training data have to be released with open weights under the GPL. That would be fun.

The number of people who almost hit me on my bike and who apologize by effectively saying, "sorry, I wasn't looking where I was driving" is stunning.

Trash day is budget bollard day in Kirkland, WA, where the city lazily drew bike lanes onto a shoulder nearly ten years ago with zero planning for conflicting uses.

"Untied States" sounds correct to me!

A U.S. citizen has asked a court to throw out the government's claim that he gave over a passcode to border authorities that wiped his phone's data, opening up fresh questions about a person's constitutional rights at the U.S. border.

Also loved the EV roadtrip shout-out. And I love how different the takeaways are here: bsky.app/profile/chri... And "charging infrastructure is a public policy issue so run for something". Classic!

So great to talk to @amandalitman.bsky.social @runforsomething.net about SCOTUS as an electoral issue, and about running for seats on state courts

Can someone please convince Trump that "America First" means banning oil and gas export from the US?

Bill Kristol@billkristolbulwark.bsky.social

“By guaranteeing the free flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, America signaled that oil from the Middle East was a secure bet. In just two months, the U.S. has transformed from a bulwark of the international energy system into its biggest source of insecurity.” www.nytimes.com/2026/05/02/o...

It's hard to imagine a better hero for these times: ✅ pissing off musky Tesla owners ✅ presumably on the way to do trucky truck things with an electric truck ✅ pissing off MAGA given the above ✅ not actually blocking anyone from charging

Ofelia Torres, the teenage Chicago Public Schools student whose fight against cancer while her father was detained by ICE came to represent the federal government's overreach during Operation Midway Blitz, has died. Brave young woman. I will never forget her. RIP.

Here's what DHS doesn't want you to know: Working for ICE is one of the safest jobs in America — and last year was the second-safest year for the agency on record. And the doxxing? It hasn't actually happened even once. The masks are justified by a lie. www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/ice-s-mask...

The “different type of warrant”:

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

JD Vance: "Nobody is talking about doing immigration enforcement without a warrant. We're talking about different types of warrants that exist in our system. Typically in the immigration system, those are handled by administrative law judges. So we're talking about getting warrants from them."

"Vast majority of men are only willing to engage in public violence if they feel like the people around them will approve of — and reward them for — that violence. ICE Watch works because it surrounds men seeking approval with people loudly expressing their disapproval." www.ms.now/opinion/minn...

MN ICE watch is measurably de-escalating violence. Attraction to ICE for newbies is social approval & group power. Now, larger group meets them with social censure. They're using more agents (taken from elsewhere) to conduct relatively fewer arrests, lowering abductions there & beyond.

What an amazingly bad headline. The left doesn't talk about birthrates because the solution is fucking obvious: immigration, childcare subsidies, 1+ year parental leave. The left loves talking about these policies. www.npr.org/2026/01/12/n...

Yes, immigration agents not only took Arnoldo's phone, the 10th grader had to use Find My Phone to locate it — in a vending machine for used electronics, close to an ICE detention center. Read the full story here: www.propublica.org/article/vide...

Saw tons of Waymos out today in downtown Kenmore (Seattle suburbs). 3 were charging at the new EVgo station. All with drivers. I imagine they're not far from opening in the Seattle area.

Three days this last week, we drove 120 miles roundtrip to a nearby Sno-Park on I-90 in our Ioniq 5 to sled or cross-country ski. This is exactly the kind of trip where BEVs will always win on basically every metric. 1/

Two of those days were with other people and both times the other car had to stop for gas, which significantly slowed them down. We never had to stop to charge (but could have, conveniently, if we were driving much further). We started each trip with 80% or 100% (didn't matter) from home.

We paid $0.05/mile, even with winter tires, cold weather and 65-75mph speeds. We had room for all our junk. We could warm up our car without exhaust. As much as I'm pro availability of busses for this purpose, it's annoying to bring skis and strollers on busses and nearly impossible to bring both.

I'd love to see some scam crossovers. "Dear sir, I am on my deathbed and prepared to remit $6 million to your bank account. All I need from you is fun and sexual company. Kindly click here to confirm delivery of a package containing the key to my house. Yours dearly, Mrs. Ann White"

@nigelherbig.bsky.social is there any plan to finish 68th Ave bike infrastructure? It's very awkward at 522. It's great if you're going north from Juanita and turning W onto 175th, fine if you're turning E onto 175th, but confusing to cross 522. Should be easier for bikes to enter our downtown!

"[M]y son and I stopped at this place where they had a bunch of bears. It was almost infested with bears; it was kind of gross. This person literally drove through the grass, through the bears, and cut off the other cars and was behind me following me out." What? www.wired.com/story/owning...
