He pisses me off specifically because when I see him, I envision him 30+ years ago as a smarmy, obnoxious debater. That was MY job, but he was so good at it he went pro, while I matured and somehow became friends with a surprising number of left-wing trans witches (I got the better deal, IMHO).

advocate.comAs Republicans face scary midterm polls, Ted Cruz blames ā€˜transgender witches’ Ahead of Halloween and a potentially scary midterm election for Republicans, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz blamed transgender witches for tight Senate polls. During an interview with Fox News, Cruz was asked why so many Republican-held Senate seats were toss-ups this year. Cruz acknowledged the frightening environment for the GOP — ā€œthere are eight to 10 Senate races that are tied or within the margin of errorā€ — before saying Republicans appear cursed because their party is in power. ā€œThis happens a lot in midterms, where the party out of power, they’re usually ticked off,ā€ he said. ā€œAnd right now, if you’re a left-wing transgender witch, you hate Donald Trump, and you’re going to show up. You’re energized.ā€ Cruz was being interviewed in Fairbanks, Alaska, where he was campaigning with Alaska Sen. Dan Sullivan. The incumbent nodded along with Cruz. **Related** : Ted Cruz uses unauthorized images of cisgender students in anti-transgender attack ads Sullivan’s record on transgender rights includes signing Republican letters opposing protections for transgender athletes and criticizing gender-affirming care for minors, according to the _Anchorage Daily News_. Those letters challenged policies allowing transgender athletes to participate in sports based on their gender identity and supporting access to gender-affirming care for minors. But Sullivan told Alaska Public Media in 2017 that he opposed President Donald Trump’s ban on transgender troops serving in the military. More recently, efforts to identify and discharge transgender service members have drawn comparisons to a witch hunt. Cruz followed his anti-trans remarks by saying ā€œordinaryā€ Alaskans hold the power to break left-wing trans voters’ spell. **Related** : Ted Cruz uses transphobia to distort Colin Allred’s support for Equality Act during Texas U.S. Senate debate ā€œDoes everybody else show up? Do conservatives show up? Do libertarians show up? Do just common sense Americans who are not lunatics who don’t think communism and Islamism are a good idea,ā€ Cruz said. ā€œIf regular, ordinary Americans show up to vote, Dan Sullivan’s going to be reelected here in Alaska, and we're going to win Senate seats and House seats all over the country.ā€ The rest of the interview featured Sullivan and Cruz distancing themselves from Trump’s decision to import diesel fuel from Russia, which both senators opposed. Polls included in _The_ _New York Times’s_ polling tracker show a tight Senate race in Alaska, with Sullivan trailing Democrat Mary Peltola in the most recent survey listed.

I just answered the door for a push-pollster for Abbott - their talking points are weak as hell, and must have abysmal targeting if chronic Democratic primary and early-voting households are on their block walks.

What is the lower age bound for first-person experience of TV Dinners? A friend about a dozen years my junior unironically referred to them as a commonplace thing (not as a historical reference) but her father is relatively old. I think very few people under 25 would think to use this term casually.

What is the peg-leg acceptability threshold? 50% is clearly okay; 100% is apparently too many. Is 75% acceptable? Gonna do a study with insects, arachnids, centipedes, and then millipedes to get maximal precision on this important question on pirate science!

Are there any studies of SA allegations against candidates or officeholders by party by year (at any level, but national would be ideal) that correlated them to ideological sorting over the past 50ish years?

Had my first colonoscopy today, and while I wait for the lab results, I am allowing my inner "pleasure to have in class" overachiever to bask in the glow of a perfect BBPS of 9/9. šŸŒŸšŸ’Æ

Why is the Trump administration trying to romanticize a period of time using false tropes and stories? This is a clear whitewashing of history to promote a revisionist, racist, and mythologized version of the antebellum South. truthout.org/articles/tru...

As a cyclist who is occasionally alone on a long country road, if I see vultures dining, I always compliment their work ethic; if they're circling too directly overhead, though, I take that as criticism of my pace.

So, I'm saddened but not surprised that the US alone voted against the UN adopting an equal area projection as its preferred world map, but annoyed the usual amount that very sexy interrupted projections are never even considered for the job!

I was riding Tracks, and a guy on the sidewalk asked if it folds. I pulled over to demonstrate it, thinking that I wished I'd been on Huffer, with its faster, easier, cooler fold. This was just a dream, but it was rude of my subconscious to call me out on how often I really do this 🤣

As a person who was interviewed by NYT a week before Trump's second inauguration on his threats to independent news, I'm most terrified by my observation that there no longer seems to be a way for the public or rank-and-file journalists to stop or counterbalance the manipulation of public attention

Mark Histed@markhisted.org

So in sum: I’d go so far as to say manipulating the public’s attention is THE major form of modern propaganda, it’s the key strategy of the rightwing media, and other outlets, from NYT to the Axel Springer Telegraph, do it too. We should pay a lot more attention to this effect. It’s powerful. /end

A UK study found that telling potential SUV buyers that those vehicles directly result in higher fatalities for pedestrians, cyclists and children had zero effect on their decision to buy them. What does work? Financial penalties: Increased fees, taxes, parking. www.theguardian.com/world/2026/j...

Drivers are always in a hurry... *unless* someone makes them angry. Then they have all the time in the world to stop, harass people, and even commit murder.

I picked up reading Woman Life Freedom after my last assignment for the semester was done, having left off last year sometime, and found that while the movement didn't have the outcome Satrapi hoped for, these panels have proven sadly prescient.

In a rare confluence of circumstance & opportunity, the window company that's come to my door every few months for years just did so again. When I told the guy that I'd just gone with a different company last week, he asked me why. "Because they don't come knocking on my door every few months."
