Hahahahahahaha… CA had some of the worst commute times in the country. They are a sprawl industrial complex. So so so many communities are like, “I don’t care if my kid’s teachers can live where they teach, they can drive ‘til they qualify” These are very common conversations in CA land use.

The War on Cars@thewaroncars.bsky.social

Ah, yes. California. A state famously inhospitable to automobiles and car-centric development.

America's Highway Trust Fund spends far more than it brings in in gas and truck taxes, and the US constantly bails the fund out from the federal general fund and by taking out loans. The Bay Area will pay ~$1.3B/year to bail out the fund yet again, starting in 2028. From @maxmautner.com.

The college industrial complex in a nutshell. “The transactional nature of corporate education facilitates this. The students are paying for a degree, not to learn. The pedagogical experience doesn’t matter, so long as the qualifications being sold are eventually delivered”

What's that you say? A UK study aimed at proving that ADHD and autism are over-diagnosed actually found that we are still under-diagnosing both, and lack access to assessments remains a huge barrier to support? What a shocking and unexpected conclusion! www.politicsuk.com/p/fonagy-rev...

But DOES NOT lead the way in adding housing, in adding affordable housing, in stopping sprawl, in encouraging density, in providing tools for economic development in rural/smaller cities, etc. One of the largest economies in the world and their big climate achievement is to preserve Carmerica + EVs.

Okay, two episodes in to latest Bake Off and so much joy and tears and just all the feels about how lovely human beings can be with/to each other even though they are dropped into a stressful situation as complete strangers. Still adore this show.

Well clearly enough Iowans are not riding Harleys because HD is experiencing declining sales and closing dealerships. I’m sure bicycling is the reason why!?! (How in God’s name did totally innocuous, lovely people rolling on a bike become the boogeyman for both the right AND moderate Dems?)

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Joe Mitchell: "Thank God you're building the ballroom. Thank God you're getting rid of those awful bike lanes. We don't ride bicycles in Iowa."

Yeah, once you get closer to the top of that pyramid, you want that VP parking space with a sign at the company where you don’t allow remote work because you want your status reinforced with endless IRL interactions with underlings. Is this human nature? Is it preventable? Ugh.

amb@amb.fyi

truly do believe the fate of human civilization at this point ultimately relies on millennials not following the reactionary selfish footsteps of gen x and boomers as our generation slowly accumulates power and money

Senior Dems are so stressed about the state of the world and the defcon 1 online emergency spam machine is a) amping up the stress; and, b) predating seniors to squeeze money out of them they often don’t have. You can’t opt out, you can’t send to spam, you can’t unsubscribe. None of it works.

amb@amb.fyi

seems increasingly clear we're underestimating how the much the exploitative dem campaign fundraising texting machine has damaged relationships to the party base and straight-up caused harm to vulnerable populations, all for consultant grift. this shit's gotta be ejected from the party apparatus

funnily enough, the Oklahoma chapter of the National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA) was one of the proponents for the single-stair code proposal in OK. You know who supported efforts to waterdown Seattle’s single-stair provisions 40 years ago? The NFSA.

Jonathan Berk 🏠@berkie1.bsky.social

Oklahoma is advancing major building code reforms to unlock middle housing; 🪜 allow single-stair up to 4 stories, 🏘️ 4-unit homes can be built under the residential building code rather than the commercial code, 🧯scale sprinkler requirements to small apartments. housingforwardok.org/news/oubcc-a...

In 2009 ish, wrote a blog post about Hungarian food in Buenos Aires that a friend found when Google searching that particular Hungarian food — that shit doesn’t happen anymore.

Google search is now so relentlessly shitting that when I search for an exhibition, I'll turn up a social media post about the exhibition, but will have to dig relentlessly to find the original website. How helpful.

This is maddening and breaks the visibility compact every ground floor space should have with the sidewalk.

Really not a fan of the glazing Benaroya Hall recently added to all the ground floor windows on the 3rd Avenue side of the building. So much for "eyes on the street" I guess?

Sad to see this piece today. I first went to Svalbard almost nine years ago and reported for WaPo on the speed of climate change there, and how many aspects of daily life were already changing in profound ways due to it. And now, here's another.

Driving/drivers are unhinged and scary AF these days. And it’s Carmerica, so almost nowhere to get away from it.

400,000 drivers illegally speeding in just a month on two streets? How can that be true when NextDoor tells me it’s always people walking and biking who break the rules of the road???

It’s really weird to hear all of this talk from ICC insiders about how code must be developed through the ICC process, and then ALSO hear them casting aspersions on me for making a formal ICC proposal without workshopping it informally with insiders first

Mo Zhu@moinmybackyard.bsky.social

R describes initial EC24-24 proposal at CAH 1. Initial 6 stories etc etc. This came out of the blue and had no input from stakeholders. Disapproved by committee 14-0.

The La Salle Hotel?! It had two stairs! It was also 22 stories tall and had 1,172 guest rooms. This is what chairs of important ICC committees (not randos!) think is in the same universe as a small apartment building.

Mo Zhu@moinmybackyard.bsky.social

Now we are talking about why multiple stairs were required. Wycoff hotel in Atlanta 119 people dead. Photograph of lady who jumped out of the building. [it's a black and white photo because we are using examples from the before times.] Also cites Lasalle Hotel 61 dead and Dubuque 16 dead.

Often it takes just one city traffic engineer to stop these one way to two way conversions. Motordom’s shills — it’s all about moving freight through downtown. Hahahahaha. Also, never forget rogue agency #OregonDOT, in the pockets of the freight lobby, ruined OR small downtowns with 1-way couplets.

This is a huge problem. Seniors are inundated constantly. There is no safe place for them via text, calls, or Web. All three are trying to scam 24/7. My parents get calls from grandkids who have been in an accident, targeted with phishing emails/texts, and tricked into clicking spyware ads. Awful.

Matt Novak@paleofuture.bsky.social

The amount of money seniors reported to the FTC as being lost to fraud jumped from $600 million in 2020 to $3 billion in 2025. But that's just what's been reported. The real number is likely much worse.
