A substorm brewing in Fairbanks, Alaska. Often, the first sign of an approaching substorm is a westward traveling surge. This type of aurora usually looks like a bright blob of aurora approaching from the east, traveling west. This is very common for substorms occuring early in the night.

New Photos: Zambia One of the surprises from last month's safari was this white baby baboon. Usually yellow baboons have dark fur. Is it leucistic? One of my colleagues speculates it's actually a hybrid of a Kinda baboon, found elsewhere in Zambia. I'll post a link with more in the comments.

Today’s Autumn Arrival Spotlight is the Bar-tailed Godwit! 😍 These long-distance travellers fly from their Arctic breeding grounds to settle along UK mudflats, where they probe for bugs with upturned bills.

It's striking to see people *still* reacting to the term neoliberalism as if it were a figment of the imagination. I guess the fish doesn't see the water in which it swims. But still to be claiming, in 2026, not to know what it is looks to me like wilful ignorance verging on denial.

I talked this week about the mental health crisis afflicting young people, in particular the isolation and loneliness caused by the neoliberal smashing of society. Everyone needs community. Everyone needs belonging. We cannot survive without them.

But did you know that moles are vital underground engineers that naturally aerate the soil. They are essential partners in a healthy ecosystem rather than nuisances, and they should be celebrated rather than targeted.

Moles are commonly deemed as pests, and are often killed by pest controllers, including those employed by local councils in the UK. The animal only has the most basic protection under UK law.
