Robotic solar system exploration, astrophotography, exasperating earnestness. My day job is impersonating your favorite planets and spacecraft on social media for your favorite government agency. Opinions are my own.

The 5-year cancer survival rate is up to 70% SIDS deaths have decreased by over 50% 89% decline in tornado deaths All thanks to federal investment in science and OUR tax dollars at work!

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Happy birthday to #mathematician & geodesist Gladys West (née Brown 1930-2026)! 🧪👩🏾‍🔬🐡🧮⚒️🔭 #histsci Shown with 3 satellites important to her career + tracks: Seasat, GEOS-3 & a GPS satellite. Her work, using math to precisely model the shape of Earth, laid the groundwork for GPS! Born to sharecropper

Raise your hand if you are an Arab scientist. 👋🏽 I say this with all the disrespect intended. Fuck you.

From NASA We’ve known since the Apollo missions that dust can present challenges for explorers on other worlds. Now, scientists are using instruments on the Perseverance rover to understand the risks of dust on Mars and find clues about how to protect future crews on the Red Planet.

From NASA The sunshade for the NEO Surveyor mission is ready for its day in the sun! 😎 NASA's Near-Earth Object (NEO) Surveyor will hunt for potentially hazardous asteroids and comets that cross Earth’s path.

NEW: "Donald Trump was an active participant in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s," per new House Judiciary Dem report. Report has new allegation that Trump raped a 24-year-old and then promised the victim a visa & NYU admission, demanding she stay quiet.

Poisonous dust aside, I love this newly released view of Nerveta Vallis, the dust-filled river channel that cuts through the rim of Jezero Crater. You can see where the river enters from the left, curves toward the camera, then off to the right. The rover found signs of potential life on these banks

"Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world’s great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters." — Maclean

Hera’s second braking manoeuvre yesterday reduced the spacecraft’s velocity relative to the Didymos and Dimorphos system by 70 m/s from a distance of 2300 km away. A trio of smaller ‘transition’ manoeuvres this coming week will reduce Hera’s relative velocity down to near zero. hera.esa.int

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

From NASA On Oct. 24, 2001, NASA's Mars Odyssey spacecraft slipped into orbit around the Red Planet. 25 years later, it's still conducting science and relaying messages from the rovers, making it the longest-operating orbiter ever at a planet beyond Earth.

GOP does nothing but gin up culture wars. Meanwhile: — GOP slashed SNAP benefits to 5+ million Americans, forcing them to turn to food banks. — Trump's tariffs and war spurred inflation, making it more expensive to eat at The Cheesecake Factory. Prices are now ~13% higher than when he took office.

Phobos is unique in a lot of ways, but one is that its largest crater is named after a woman! Chloe Angeline Stickney Hall worked with her husband to search for the moons of Mars, though ceased helping him with the calculations when he refused to pay her a man’s wages for her work.

Crater Fact Friday ☄️DID YOU KNOW☄️ that Mars' moon Phobos has a massive crater? Stickney is 9 km across and is named after Chloe Angeline Stickney Hall, an American mathematician and suffragist whose calculations were critical to the discovery of the martian moons in 1877.
