I'll color this later, but I wanted to sketch this idea out for revising August here. Swap a pair of wings for a third set of arms, change the head to be more jay-like with a tall crest (and lose the redundant ears), and this is feels more like me.

Rathalos from Monster Hunter (big red fire-breathing wyvern thing) keeps showing up in crossovers (e.g. in FF14 and in Super Smash Bros Ultimate). I think it's the same one every time; a poor lost predator who drifts through the cosmos and just randomly wreaks havoc wherever it goes.

Name two characters you think are the same person.

Something I'm looking forward to revealing once the Patreon is up and going is all the old concept art and music that's come out of this Bitkin project over the years. Now that the project is actually becoming something and I'm telling Patch's story, I've got lots of my own stories to share too.

I'm still proud of the music, but I can't use it in the current Bitkin project because it was all written for an action platformer - active, melodic, short loops - and it absolutely doesn't fit a word puzzle where you need to spend time concentrating on things.

I figured out what was nagging at me about my persona (August, as seen in my current PFP). I'll warm up today with a redesign, though not before lunch and some errands. I also keep getting distracted by side projects. XenoWorks ("productivity for aliens") is trying to come back into focus.

Took some time to design a replacement puzzle I liked, so that's all set to code up this coming week. Meanwhile I think I need to play around with layouts for the Elseways Gazette, because it's coming up to where I'll want to start that going.

Sketch I did earlier of a random Elseways squirrel and some typographical design for Origin Park, which is the big green rectangle in the middle of the city that holds gardens, playgrounds, walking paths, and bandstands. It connects a lot of the city's areas and is a common place to meet up.

I've felt isolated lately, but it's for a reason I don't think is actually true, and maybe the logic here will both help me explain myself and help anyone else who feels like I do. It's about my sexual orientation/identity. So let's start with an oversimplification and work up from there.

You could still try to systematize this. Call –1 "disgust", 0 "neutral" and 1 "attracted to", and you could call your sexual identity a high-dimensional vector in this space, but I don't think any two people would agree on what all of the axes are.

All we can do is understand that this _is_ complicated, and we don't have to be in the same place on a chart to understand one another and appreciate all the ways we're similar and different. Someone else being disgusted by something you're attracted to doesn't mean you can't connect.

It makes a cute square chart: you could plot 0,0 as ace, 1,1 as bi, 0,1 as straight, 1,0 as gay, where x is same-sex and y is opposite-sex attraction, and everyone is somewhere inside this. But we can still expand this more, because this is only two-dimensional and people are far more complicated.

I sometimes call myself ace/aro, but I've never felt comfortable with that label because I'm a little outside that (0,0) corner in a _third_ axis (and trace amounts of the other 2 anyway). In fact, there are an unlimited number of other axes here corresponding to every possible kink out there.

“Straight people are attracted to the opposite sex, and gay people are attracted to the same sex, and everyone is one or the other” is better but still false. It at least acknowledges that homosexuality exists. We can still do better than this, of course.

“People are attracted to the two sexes in different amounts, and depending on these amounts, a person is either straight, gay, ace, or bi” is still better and it’s what feels to me like the general understanding of how sexuality works.

"Men only love women, and women only love men" is obviously false. It's a toddler-level understanding of the world. It's true for the majority of cases (as far as I know, most people in the world are straight), but it's not a universal at all.

Comics. There are more diverse voices and ideas in comics now than there were even 25 years ago, and it's helped open up the medium for a real variety of stories to be told beyond superheroes punching each other.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

The ideas I've had for the one puzzle I wanted to rewrite are stubbornly refusing to work as a design (and it's not even the big final one, just one of the few leading up to it). Everything else is basically in and working. It's pretty frustrating to be so close but so blocked.

My options are to keep trying to make this work, or take the extra time to code up something entirely new but that will work better. I'm leaning toward the latter, even if it'll make my stated November 2 release day slide forward.

Let's do this. I'll give myself one extra week to release so I can code up the replacement puzzle and make it solid instead of trying to make this broken thing work. Everything else is already in and going, so I'm not making any extra work for myself apart from this one rewrite. Nov. 9 is the date.

More vegetarian options in restaurants and supermarkets. Far, far less public smoking and a de-emphasis on cigarette culture. And, from what I have heard: bullying is FAR LESS tolerated in schools!!

Fun fact: We're also seeing the same sort of backlash against trans people! No, there isn't an "epidemic" of transness. People are just more aware of it now, and accordingly a bit more able to (and less afraid to) transition. bsky.app/profile/jude...

The Bitkin site is going to have one of these prominently displayed in the sidebar.

You might have seen the original "no genAI seal" by @kanaratron.bsky.social. I've made the icon into a set of assets in both PNG and vector formats that can be more widely used in different contexts. You can find them here: www.joramwolters.com/no-gen-ai-ico/

Picotron has a "shared data" feature that I should be able to use to make The Last Word split across multiple cartridges that share save data. It's not that I don't think it would fit in one (one cartridge can hold a lot), but being able to release it one chapter at a time would be very helpful.

I sometimes worry about my art being too strange or obsessive over unusual traits (like my by-now-standard extra limbs), but then I remind myself that the kind of people who appreciate those things don't have enough of them available because I'm like that too. I make things I wish existed.

Needed a break from Bitkin, so I started to work out how to do palette stuff in Picotron. I'd like parts of the game to fade in from this parchment-orange background to the "ink" ramp of colors, and it turns out there's a straightforward way to make that effect happen.

In light of the PHP stuff going on, I should mention that Bitkin is completely unaffected; it's all JS (based on React, Typescript, and Vite). There's no PHP in there at all. In fact, it's a static site - all of the answer checking and progress saving and so on happens locally in your own browser.

i've recently heard that some ai bros want to make an smw central alternative because we don't allow gen ai content on the site. here's my direct response to those people. "who owns rom hacking?" and other questions ai poisons us with shoujo.gay/who-owns-rom...

Took a break from coding the last puzzle to get caught up with Taeko Tashiyama, who's off on her first assignment with the Cosmos Corps, testing water for pollutants so they know how to fix it. Her family wanted her to stay home and help run the resort, but she always wanted to get farther away.

That's one more milestone: all the story text of Bitkin Act 1 is in. It's getting closer to release. I need to spend the rest of the week writing code and putting the actual final puzzle in. Still on track for the Nov. 2 release, and I'm no less nervous about it.

Replying to @philsalv.bsky.social

One time, we got an unsolicited package promoting a game history slopsite like this. It proudly declared that the PlayStation 5 was the "first five-dimensional game console"

Co-signed! That’s what libraries are for, and they do pay us! Never apologize!

Someone said to me, "I'm sorry but I got your book from a library." Nobody should ever apologise for that. You read my book! That's brilliant! I grew up hanging out in libraries and the idea of a world without them fills me with dread. Without libraries, authors, like readers, will only suffer.

✨️Reference vs Art✨️ While we've used a lot of references to keep our dinosaurs as cartoony-realistic as possible, two mostly stick out: @twarda.bsky.social making clay models of Popoeilo the Azhdarchid and intro Lambeosaurus for the more tricky shots of the animated cutscenes in Zniw Adventure!

✨️Reference vs Art✨️ Because if you can, why not sew an makeshift robe and make a pope hat out of cardboard?

Sketched a version of Pikachu in line with my dream last night; this didn't literally appear, but I don't remember of the actual designs well enough, so I decided to "backport" the most famous one to how it would've looked in that retro setting. Weird little electric rat gremlin!
