When people say "Old Anime Feels Real" this is what they're talking about. The light? That's the real world shining through the back of the cel. The colors? Real acrylic paint that physically existed somewhere. Each frame was a photograph, & on some level you trust it implicitly.

If someone's taking up the mantle to write about games with 'capital C' art criticism, tell me how you really feel, or just put that mantle down. Otherwise, you can use the undefeated system that was already perfected over 30 years ago, so I know how exactly seriously I should take your work.

My basic response to the "Godfather of games" thing is that generally if I like a game, that means I think it's good, and if I don't, that means I think it's bad. I don't really do "I recognize it's good but I don't like it."

I wrote a piece literally called "Games Criticism Is A Kindness" but paradoxically: that doesn't mean I think crit can't be mean. Criticism is human enterprise. Excess qualification saves you from mean commenters but it shaves off the human pieces. Sometimes a thing is bad, a behavior is wrong.

one of the major changes in media criticism online in the last half decade is that when people used to do big leftist critiques of why harry potter sucks they always had a disclaimer like "now this doesn't mean i think you're a bad person for enjoying the books." they dont really do that any more
