At a time of growing concern about climate impacts and following a summer marked by unprecedented heat, we believe it is vital that Bristol's representatives speak with a clear and united voice to tackle climate change.

We therefore ask you to join us in expressing opposition to this decision and to call on the Government to prioritise the rapid transition to a clean, secure and affordable energy system that is consistent with the UK's legally binding climate obligations and the wishes of the residents of Bristol.

As elected representatives, we recognise the importance of energy security and affordable energy bills for our residents. But this will not bring down bills or protect jobs and will only provide profit to the fossil fuel companies that are wrecking our planet.

Lasting energy security will only come from reducing our reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets and investing in the green transition; home-grown renewable energy, storage, demand reduction and energy efficiency measures.

These efforts reflect the wishes of many Bristol residents who want to see decisive action to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and accelerate the transition to a clean energy future. The approval of a new offshore oil and gas development is an insult to this ambition.

Now, when this Labour Government should be accelerating investment in renewable energy, insulation, energy efficiency and clean technology, approving new fossil fuel extraction will lock in further emissions and undermine confidence in the Government’s commitment to legally binding emission targets.

As a city, Bristol has worked hard to establish itself as a leader on climate action. Bristol City Council was the first to declare a climate emergency in 2018 and has recently announced that we have reduced our direct emissions by 75% since 2015/16.

As a city, we have also invested significant effort into promoting clean energy, climate resilience, sustainable transport, energy efficiency and nature recovery.

The extreme heat we all experienced this summer raised serious concerns about public health, pressure on public services, and the resilience of our city's infrastructure.

We, alongside many Bristolians, are therefore alarmed that the Government is choosing to escalate drilling for fossil fuels - an act of climate vandalism that will only make the situation worse.

FULL LETTER Dear Bristol Labour MPs and Bristol Labour We are writing to urge you to join us in publicly condemning the Government's decision to approve the Jackdaw gas field and call for a renewed commitment to tackling the climate emergency.

This decision from your Government is extremely concerning at a time when Bristol is already experiencing the escalating consequences of climate change.

Speaking on the decision, Councillor Abi Finch, Chair of the Environment and Sustainability Policy Committee said, “This decision is a huge slap in the face for all of us working to tackle the climate emergency and prepare for more extreme weather like we saw this summer.

“Bristol has worked tirelessly to establish itself as a leader on climate action. We were the first council to declare a climate emergency and as a Council have reduced our direct emissions by 75% since 2015.

The Energy Secretary says North Sea drilling “won’t take a penny off energy bills.” The Health Secretary says summer heatwaves put pressure on the NHS. So where’s the Government’s impact assessment? If they don’t have one, they should delay the decision on drilling for oil & gas until they do.

Former Labour Deputy Leader Lord Thomas Watson, now Senior VP at Palantir UK, wrote to me defending their public contracts. Instead of trading letters, I’ve challenged him to an open, public debate. He can defend Palantir’s ethos; I’ll argue for public accountability. Will you accept, Tom?

This is absolutely true, but it can also *shock horror* be absolutely true that we are better off referring back the Zionism is Racism motion.

*Jonathan himself* is glaring proof his argument is bunk. He’s been noisily doing “Last chance to save Israel from itself” the entire 25 years I’ve known who he was; nothing that happened in that time altered his opinion one inch, he is a relentless opponent of any attempt to mitigate the horrors.

In the 1970s over 30% of the population lived in council housing, and I was one of them. In 1978 we could easily run a household on £60 a week, took regular holidays, and had zero personal debt. All because the landlord didn't take most of our income.

I'm pretty sure, that's NOT what she is saying. In a nutshell, she, quite rightly, argues: - demanding one very specific outcome for Palestine, rules out all other outcomes - including good ones. - this will lose support for the Green Party. What you are seeing, is how a true democratic party works

It seems really really hard for journalists to understand that simply having a motion be popular in a prioritisation ballot does not mean it will actually pass...and that the alternative is a non-democratic party. No thanks, @iandunt.bsky.social.

The "Zionism is racism" motion, to be debated at the Green Party conference tomorrow, will not advance the Palestinian cause one inch. But, if adopted, it would marginalise and discredit the party. There are powerful ways to confront the genocide. Toxic gesture politics isn't one of them.

The Green Party is ready for government with a different vision for society. The Green philosophy has always been that there's enough resources on this planet for everyone to have a decent life, for us to look after climate and nature, if we share them out fairly.

This looks so brilliant. 🌱 🎶 🚲 A proper plan to provide people with a safe and healthy alternative to driving to work in Oxford from surrounding towns and villages. Hoping this clear plan gives confidence for funding to be provided for each of the sections to be built very soon.

Privatisation of water has been an absolutely unmitigated disaster. The Green Party would put water back into public hands and reverse years of radical underinvestment.

Excellent speech from @zackpolanski.bsky.social. Bold, direct and principled. Particularly glad to see Zack speak so directly about the urgency of council house building, an emergency break on private rents. Also wonderful to see support for RNL and a politician speaking against fascist vigilantism.
