Monstrous beyond all reckoning. The US is using remote sensing *designed for humanitarian purposes* for the opposite purpose, potentially drowning civilians en masse. Trump hates Somalis. His troops appear to be exploiting the weather to help slaughter them. www.theguardian.com/global-devel...

Planting a tree means nothing if it dies a week later. Local authority tree planting is down 45%, and the trees we do plant are heavily imported, bringing biosecurity risks with them. @nationaltrust.org.uk #EcoSky #TreePlanting #GrownInBritain

This is horrific. And unsurprisingly the work of a "conservative" multimillionaire. Other adjectives might include creepy, prurient, dictatorial and abusive, not to mention, of course, transphobic. Once more with feeling: we need to get the money out of politics. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

I warned 3 years ago that mink farms are a likely route to a new and horrific human pandemic, and once more I'm fervently praying it doesn't map out that way. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Wild new story from @natlash.bsky.social Bird flu has been raging uncontrolled on a mink farm for two months. Flu experts fear it could spark a devastating human pandemic. But officials haven’t acted, instead prioritizing the financial interests of the fur trade. www.propublica.org/article/bird...

Who to believe? A man who lies so often many people now regard it as normal. Or the leader of a proud nation that has resisted invasion by the dictatorship for over four years. Shouldn't be a hard choice for anyone.

Sure, we should, if we can (many cannot). But as I keep pointing out, the government itself is making no provision at all. No stockpiles, no back-up, no alternative sources. It's individuating the response to a collective problem, and that never ends well. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

This won't go anywhere, obviously, but it's still a useful indication of how they'd act if they ever get into Government. Locking up journalists would just be the start

I am furious that the government approved Jackdaw - a gas field that will do nothing for jobs, bills, or energy security. This climate vandalism has to stop. The answer is No To Rosebank.

Let’s eradicate our life support systems – that’ll teach the liberals! It's not just about giving destructive industries what they want, important as this is. The likes of Trump and Bolsonaro will kill the planet out of a vengeful desire to hurt. My column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

After the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact was signed, Stalin toasted Hitler as a "fine fellow". Later in 1939, Soviet state newspaper Pravda published birthday greetings sent to Stalin, full of warm praise, from both Hitler and Ribbentrop. Evil attracts evil.
Steve Witkoff to Putin: "You are a humanitarian also, sir. And I salute that, I commend you, and I thank you again."

BBC News is a good example of big cuts still to come. Today, it has told staff of 100 more job losses, saving £5.5m. That's on top of previous cuts of £25m and £1.8m. But it has to get to a total of £51m in cuts - so still plenty to come next year.
NEW: BBC confirms BBC Three, BBC Scotland, Radio 4 Extra channels to go, but there is an even more worrying development. After all the cuts so far, the BBC is not even HALF WAY to its £500m savings target. Some big calls to come... www.theguardian.com/media/2026/o...
