Dived into some code for the first time in a month (I know, I know). Mainly did a little tidy up of a bunch of util scripts (so they don't get included in builds), and also set up some stuff for versioning (grab the hash on build, and include it on the main menu).

Should be ready to tackle a few things based on feedback I got from when I demoed at IGDAM last month. (Which I'm hoping will be enough to solidify the core loop - so I can make plans for further production!)

I don’t know how people could say that programming and art are completely different disciplines when both workflows involve going ‘This will never work, I’m a failure’, changing one thing, then thinking you might be the smartest person alive

Got a good handle on editing the next vid. Though not sure when I'll have it 100% ready, as there's some bits I need to do which need a small trip out of the house… …and I'm not quite at the stage of my recovery from this medical stuff where that's possible.

What stings is that I had a little too much hopium that today might have been the day when my recovery was at the point that things would change for the better… alas. Kinda bummed out because I don't want to miss some social shit coming up (I'm already missing out on something this week).

It always comes back to this for me; if AI was so good, such a disclosure would be a selling point. If AI was everything these slop jockeys said it was, they should be proud to let people know their game was AI made. But the proof is in the pudding, and they can't stand that people don't want it.

You know it. Why would I choose to use a technology which enriches horrible oligarchs. That contributes to wrecking the economy. One which is built off stolen labour, and causes environmental distress and works to destroy folks' cognitive functions.

Seeing I won’t have a video for y’all this month, just a bump on the last few I’ve done that you might want to catch up on if you haven’t caught them! Like my look at the utterly rad Razing Core on the SMS.

Rob Caporetto@robcap.bsky.social

NEW VIDEO TIME! It's been a while since we've seen a modern shmup which manages to push the limits of its target platform, but @badcomputer.bsky.social's Razing Core for the Master System is absolutely one which sits amongst the greats on that machine! www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzjsfD…

Every time I discover a cool looking project, i check it and either confirm it’s slopped, or don’t but feel suspicious. The fact this is now my default behaviour is draining af. I’m tired of feeling this way, and so I feel this article in my bones oh so much. OH. SO. MUCH. 😭

Spent a little time with the Queen's Domain demo to distract from some mood business, and I'd already been looking forward to the full release, but really clicked with it and even more looking forward to it next weekend. store.steampowered.com/app/4081520/...

store.steampowered.comQueen's Domain Demo on SteamA retro-fantasy action RPG with brutal combat and traversal-focused exploration. Embark on a quest to find your father who disappeared on the mysterious Isle of Neasied, where sinister forces gather, ...

Reflecting a bit on the BioWare closure, and I have some big feels (outside of the private equity ruining things and late stage capitalism stuff). Like, Mass Effect holds a bit spot in my heart 'cause it was the first time I feel I experienced a proper Space Opera in game form.

Sure, there were other games which had elements of it in their stories, but they never felt as grand as the Mass Effect trilogy did. Plus, while other games did character transfer stuff, it was ME where it truly felt special for me. Even with the ups & downs, it's such a special series for me.

Man this sucks. Another bunch of devs fed to the chopping block ('cause the megacorp has to save money thanks to the private buyout), and a storied icon now torn down. 😢

Can't deny I've been feeling a bit of the old ennui this week. Not really being able to leave the house (because of some post-surgery business), and feeling a little worried about whether I'm actually going to be able to go to some social things I'm really looking forward to kinda stings.

But at least there's a first draft of the next video's script, which won't appear until early next month, but at least it's in progress. Gotta get myself on the metaphorical horse again to work on the game, but man, missing MIGW really took the wind out of the sails on that front.

"Waiting Mode" is the blurst. Waiting for the call to confirm when I'm getting my daily check-up by the med staff, and until I get it, I can't crank myself into doing stuff which needs heavy focus (ie. code, script stuff or whatever). Hate spinning my gears like this.

Toaplan's Slap Fight didn't have a huge production run or the success of the likes of Tiger-Heli or Truxton. It's an important game in the studio's history, though, that combined ideas from its existing work with that of Gradius, B-Wings, and more, and is available once again in the present.

Applied for a role at a small dev firm. First interview went badly, but the agency I applied through got me a second chance interview. Did alright enough with that for a 2 week trial, and halfway through day 2, they canned me.

This post is unavailable.

The cherry on top was a few weeks later when I got a letter in the post basically asking if I was owed anything from the agency… …as it turns out they'd gone bust. (Thankfully I got my money for that day and a half of work) It's the big reason why I don't trust recruiters.

…though at least in the before times, I used to be able to land stuff regularly. But who knows now with how messed up everything is. Can't deny that I feel like a broken machine as a result of it all of late.

I'm not a gigantic pinball aficionado, but a bunch of tables I dig the most had Ritchie's touch on them. Certainly a well-earned retirement if you ask me after such a long career.

Whoa Steve Ritchie just announced his retirement. I mean, well deserved and I hope he is able to really lean into it. Incredible career with so many iconic pinball designs. Thank you for endless hours of fun! 🫡 www.knapparcade.com/blog/legenda...

You know that horror movie, Smile? Well my smile was bigger after playing this at PAX....

I don’t wanna gatekeep, but programming is meant to be hard. It’s meant to be a damn process which involves plenty of thought and planning to build software, or libraries which can be maintained down the line. Throwing your hands up and letting the slop machine handle it does not guarantee quality.

I dread to think of how much code for we’re going to get over the next few years from things coded in this way. I dread the technical debt we will all have to repay from such short-sighted visions to line the pockets of a bunch of oligarch cunts. No wonder people increasingly hate tech.

Shouldn't be much of a surprise based on the last few days, but I'm not going to have a video ready for this month thanks to all the distractions. (And will be pausing payments on Patreon as a result for those paying supporters as a result…) www.patreon.com/robc/posts/no-…
