Live-posting this hearing was quite challenging. Things moved fast, there were references to materials that aren’t public, and I don’t have a transcript yet. But here’s a 🧵with some additional details we learned today (with the caveat that i’ll need to confirm some things w/ the transcript later):

COMING UP: Preliminary hearing before magistrate judge Faruqui in the criminal case of former FBI agents charged with false statements to Congress and obstruction. Things could get very interesting... I'm here in the media room for @lawfaremedia.org. Follow along!

Each 1% increase in fossil PM2.5 pollution would likely lead to between 1,000 and 5,000 additional American deaths per year. For reference, just under 3,000 Americans died on 9/11. So, very roughly, 1% more fossil fuel use corresponds to about a 9/11 worth of US death per year, indefinitely.

fine particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter. That 100k+ estimate includes only death, not non-lethal suffering, and only PM2.5, not other air pollutants or any water pollutants. By accelerating buildout of pollutng fossil fuel infrastructure, BAAJA would worsen health/mortality risks.

for vulnerable people in communities near the polluting infrastructure that BAAJA would make it easier to build. This is not hyperbole: Scientists attribute somewhere between 100,000 and 500,000 excess deaths per year to air pollution from fossil fuels. And not even all air pollution, just PM2.5,

There's a grim undercurrent to discourse about BAAJA, the permitting bill the Senate will likely vote on in a few weeks. Writing about this makes me kinda queasy, but I think it's important so here goes. What good stuff the bill might do would come at the cost of increased risk of illness and death

Trump II as very specifically an effort to erase JFK seems like an underdiscussed angle. Bulldozed Jackie's rose garden, threatening to bulldoze the Kennedy Center, stripped the Kennedy blue off Air Force One, shuttered USAID, put JFK's animal torturing nephew in charge of reviving polio, now this

President Trump wants to build a 250-foot-tall arch. If completed, it will cast shadows on many graves and monuments in nearby Arlington National Cemetery, the @washingtonpost.com's 3-D analysis found. On some days, Trump's arch would even shade the grave and eternal flame of JFK.

Major press failure: treating Jared Kushner taking foreign bribes and shaping US foreign policy as less relevant than Hunter Biden not taking bribes nor influencing policy.
