New preprint! Universities increasingly expect academics to practise open science. But is it rewarded when hiring? We analysed 1,356 academic job ads from Norwegian institutions and found that <5% of ads mentioned open science as a required or desired qualification osf.io/preprints/ps...

Such a large percentage of my day involves popups like this. Apparently, my passkey is in a superposition of registered and not registered, and I cannot make the waveform collapse. The impenetrable fortress that is the current Teams ecosystem. #minorannoyances

New paper! Accepted at Perspectives on Psychological Science. A textbook finding in infant psychology is that newborns - within ~1 hour of birth - visually track a simplified 'three blob' facelike stimulus further than its inverted control (see picture). This suggested inborn knowledge of faces!

Dr Nick@nmwilkinson.eurosky.social

ok the editorial and publication process is taking too long, so here is link to the accepted manuscript for our systematic review of the newborn face preference literature. it unearths a rather strange tale. check it out, any thoughts much appreciated www.researchgate.net/publication/...

Just like that: poof & gone. RIP *all* of NSF social, behavioral and economic research (including psyc & cogneuro). I’m speechless.

Dan Garisto@dangaristo.bsky.social

In response to our questions, an NSF spokesperson said that SBE has not been shut down. But with zero SBE-specific funding opportunities, no review panels, and dwindling numbers of staff, it's hard to see the directorate continuing for much longer.

Exactly this. Make yourself and your work easily findable. Yes, also if you are just starting - Perhaps you gave an impressive talk or an exciting poster, and I want to know more, invite you to something, or recommend you to a colleague. I can't count the number of times I just gave up & moved on

samuel mehr@mehr.nz

early-career academics, if you don't have a website, make yourself one. yes it's annoying but just do it it can be plain text on a white background, or google sites, or even a free Wix one with ads. nobody cares we just need to be able to look you up, quickly, bc there's like 100 other apps here

So thankful to the University of Cambridge for enabling a new chapter in the long history of the APU/CBU (since MRC decided to close all its units…)

Cambridge University announces a new Cambridge Mind and Brain Institute focused on understanding and improving brain health across our lifespan, from early childhood through to old age. Find out more 👉 https://bit.ly/4hpgZsl @mrccbu.bsky.social

Hi, I'd like to apply for the lifetime achievement award. Although my chronological age would seemingly render me ineligible, my biological age? Firmly in the eligibility window. How old do I feel (subjective age)? I'm at death's door. Thank you for your consideration

Unfortunate, yet understandable and clearly very carefully deliberated course changes at OSF. Anyone who's worked on anything OS related knows that getting funding for exciting new projects is hard, let alone sustained, long term funding. OSF has been the foundation for many improvements in science.

Brian Nosek@briannosek.bsky.social

Over the next several months, we will phase out some popular OSF features. These changes do not affect current public content, which remains safe and accessible. We have prepared support material to help users adapt. I am very sorry for the disruption to your work. Please read this post for details.

New preprint w/ Leo Tiokhin & @lakens.bsky.social! Registered Reports (RRs) are great for science b/c publication is guaranteed before results are known, reducing publication bias & QRPs. This feature supposedly also makes them great for *scientists*. But is that really true? 1/ tinyurl.com/4sy993rr

Neuroscientist Dr. Brenda Milner is recognized as one of the fundamental founders of modern cognitive neuropsychology. She proved the hippocampus is essential for forming long-term "declarative" memory (facts, names & events). She was born #OTD in 1918--she's 108 years old today! #WomenInSTEM

This is the most exciting projects I've worked on - Bringing together new methods and large datasets to answer an increasingly important question. Our findings (led by @njudd.com) suggest wildfire pollution has a measurable, negative impact on neurocognitive development in children

Outlook can't open a Teams link in an email directly in Teams - but their shortcut to 'add to music as a spoken track' is, presumably, what they think is the next best thing.

I have to say, it's making me feel a little insane hearing commentators say Ed Miliband shouldn't be chancellor because of his "ideological zeal" for Net Zero, in a week where temperatures are so extreme that my kids are being sent home early every day and it's regularly 30 degrees inside my house

In the Netherlands, edtech platforms (Prowise, Gynzy) track performance and implement adaptive testing at the trial level. Regardless of their merits & drawbacks (both exist aplenty), are people aware of other countries (especially global south/LMIC's) that widely use such platforms in schools?

Who are 'we' you ask? We are your favourite online celebration of the harsh, the weird, the passive aggressive, the active aggressive and the downright mean comments practicing scientists receive on a regular basis. Because a review shared is a review halved* (*proverbs aren't our forte)

You thought we'd disappeared - Nothing could be further from the truth. After a four year silent retreat, cleansing ourself from the energy of The Other Place and the lingering aftertaste of several hundred harsh reviews, we're back! We'll be reposting the back catalogue & taking new submissions.

Congratulations - A heroic effort on an important topic by a stellar team of researchers

Sakshi Ghai@sakshighai.bsky.social

Honoured to share our new paper in @nature.com today. Across 12 countries in eastern and southern Africa and Southeast Asia, 1 in 6 internet-using children had experienced technology-facilitated child sexual exploitation and abuse. A thread 🧵

My fave work event: the annual writing retreat of the Lifespan Cognitive Dynamics lab. We wrote, cooked, went on long walks & discovered each other’s niche passions (traditional dance, metros, temperature, the best cats in Nijmegen & more), and I did more writing in 3 days than in 3 'normal' weeks
