Today is a big day for Herb! It's built into Rails 8.2 by default for all HTML+ERB views. My talk at #RailsWorld in Austin today answered three questions: What is Herb? What ships in Rails 8.2? And what does this enable? Herb v0.11 and ReActionView v0.6 released alongside it.

ActiveHashcash 0.6.0 is out πŸŽ‰ Proof-of-work for Rails forms, now with IP reputation and configurable throttle rules for pushy IPs. Bots work harder and humans still don’t solve captchas.

I reduced the size of a SQL table and its indexes from 300 MB to 70 MB: 1. No timestamps (16 bytes less per row) 2. No ID column (natural primary key, so one less index) 3. CREATE TABLE name (...) WITHOUT ROWID (SQLite only)

The improvement is significant because I/O operations are smaller and the data is more easily cached by the file system. Of course, not all models are suitable for these tips. The more rows a table has, the more important it is to carefully choose the column types.

RDoc 8.0.0 is out now. This is the biggest RDoc release in years, and it brings together a lot of the Ruby documentation work I talked about at RubyKaigi. Also, RDoc now has a logo!

I realized it has been ~1.5 years since I concluded my series of post on JSON optimization. So I got curious how much faster it became since then. 2.7.2 was the last version before I took over maintainership. 2.9.0 was the version I released at the end of the blog series.
