Eneko Aspillaga presented their work on getting 1D movement data from detections on single receivers. For tags with suitable random, discrete emission intervals, this allows for movement analysis on sparse telemetry arrays (i.e. without 2D or 3D fine scale positioning).
I'll be presenting my work on underwater #acoustictelemetry positioning this week at the ETN Symposium (@aquatictracking.bsky.social) in Copenhagen; i.e. models for tracking fish. #FishSci Here's a link to my talk 👇 along with the code and data used to create the figures. zenodo.org/records/2330...
The talk is a quick summary of these recent positioning papers/preprints: - doi.org/10.64898/202... - doi.org/10.64898/202... - doi.org/10.1111/2041...

“Perhaps the most relevant issue is that by releasing this trove of material in this manner, the companies are in the process of destroying the ecosystem that made it possible for this work,” she said." To me, this is the crux. Science is a human, community endeavor. They are destroying science.

Anthropic's new User Policy forbids you from engaging in "sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior toward our models". It does not, however, explain what the fuck this could possibly mean.

Quick oceans update: yah, sea surface temperatures remain in new territory this year. See more at zacklabe.com/climate-chan.... This data (extrapolar ocean) is provided by @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social ERA5. 🌊

New #citizenscience #ALAN paper out from my labmates.
@pfrazee.com what's the status of editing posts on here? Is this something that's on the roadmap? My accumulation of spelling mistakes is starting to become painful on here 😬.
Preprint: This short paper is my take on how to calculate/report absolute measures of time-difference-of-arrival positioning in #acoustictelemetry setups. Beyond reporting, these error measures can be passed to statespace models (like CTCRW) for very accurate post-processing estimates.
An extended Kalman filter for large-volume path positioning of aquatic animals within acoustic telemetry arrays
New preprint out: I use an extended Kalman filter for #acoustictelemetry positioning. It solves positions more-less instantly while applying a CTCRW movement model. It works great on datasets that don't have huge outliers (due to horizontal reflections).
Absolute measures of time-difference-of-arrival positioning error in underwater acoustic telemetry setups

A population Monte Carlo model for underwater acoustic telemetry positioning in reflective environments
New #FishSci #AcousticTelemetry positioning paper: PMC-TOA positioning. I used adaptive importance sampling & mixture distributions to position fish in environments prone to tag reflections. Mixed with post-processing, this gives great tracks! doi.org/10.1111/2041...

fun fact! Musk's fossil fuelled data centres almost certainly emit more climate pollution than is saved by all Tesla vehicles ketanjoshi.co/2026/03/02/m...
As GOP postures against data centers, here’s what their moneyman Elon Musk just demanded at G20 on data centers: “It is pretty straightforward, you have to have an environment that is relatively free of regulation. New things must be default legal instead of default illegal.”
The authors used a fucking web article from pethelpful.com in their "literature review of national animal welfare regulations".

Vol. 2, no. 5 of the CO2 Newsletter, June-August 1981 is now downloadable. Founded by American geologist William Barbat, each was 8 pages of excerpts from recent reports, editorials and deeply researched articles. All 18 issues are heart-breakers. allouryesterdays.info/co2-newslett... 1/9
