“If I sit next to a madman as he drives a car into a group of innocent bystanders, I can't, as a Christian, simply wait for the catastrophe, then comfort the wounded and bury the dead. I must try to wrestle the steering wheel out of the hands of the driver.” ~Dietrich Bonhoeffer

This is legit wild. One of the Trumpiest GOP kooks we’ve had holding high office here in Texas makes an absolute spot-on, beautiful, non-partisan call for government transparency against the governor’s attempt to hide his emails with Elon Musk.

Mad respect to Arch Manning for honoring his uncle Peyton’s fine family tradition of being unable to find a way to get a “W” against the Gators

Zacharia announced as Press Sec Oct. 9, first briefing Oct. 13, defenestrated Oct. 16. A @Scaramucci is 11 days. She made it 8 since announcement, 4 since actively in the job. So about 73% or 36% of a Scaramucci, depending on which date you count.

It does appear the "data center eliminated Nazi and otherwise fuckface bots" narrative is basically wishcasting, it does show you how popular getting rid of this shit would broadly be, and that maybe a smart person should run on it.

Kate Starbird@katestarbird.bsky.social

Y’all, I hate to rain on the dead bot parade, but the Yandex data center destruction doesn’t seem to have significantly impacted social media bots. I made temporal graphs of X posts about AfD around the time of the attack and there’s no sign of a sudden dip or residual impact on that conversation.

LOL “nearly $100” *does* sound a lot better than $90? And, Medicare premiums increased by over twice that amount ($205). AND grocery prices have increased by almost 3% since 2024. For a two-person family spending minimally, that’s by about $10 per week! “Checks” indeed.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: My Administration will, immediately, begin sending 'Checks' of nearly $100 to over 20 MILLION wonderful Seniors to help pay for their Medicare Part B premium ... This money will come from the Medicare Improvement Fund, a pointless 'Slush Fund' that has only been used by Dumocrats ... "

and Gov. DeSantis has given Christopher Rufo a lot of power over our state's education system. Unqualified + hateful creep is a heckuva combo. Byron Donalds went to FAMU this week and proudly declared he would continue DeSantis' anti-DEI policies. Vote wisely, my fellow Floridians.

Christopher Mathias@letsgomathias.bsky.social

New: Chris Rufo & his co-host devoted a podcast to "The Indian Question," framing Desi people as a problem to be solved. Their "solution?" Mass expulsion. For those allowed to remain: an “assimilation hazing process” w/ instances of “vulgar, defamatory racism" talkingpointsmemo.com/news/chris-r...

BREAKING: SCOTUS, for a third time, rejects efforts to upend Missouri’s congressional map. Criticizing the Eighth Circuit’s actions, the Supreme Court’s order stated, “Given this Court’s two prior orders in this litigation, our conclusion that this was error should come as no surprise.”

Trump's immigration crackdown isn't a hit with voters. Even 37% of REPUBLICANS in TEXAS support illegal immigrants having a "way to stay legally if they meet certain requirements" 66% of Texas voters overall support.

My new employer is fond of the maximizing excitable headlines, but this is just the bluntest possible expression of my point: Freedom of the press is vital--and you prove that by doing the work that supports democracy, not by talking about doing it.

Does anyone believe JD Vance would have the same opinion if a Democratic President removed Fox News? Hell, if they simply declined to call on a Fox News reporter for questions, he'd lose his mind...

#BREAKING: Over *no* public dissents, #SCOTUS *stays* the federal district court’s TRO in the Missouri redistricting case, effectively restoring the Missouri Supreme Court ruling from last week (and the 2022 map that it requires the state to use in November).

Here's a gift link to my 9/11 essay in the NYT. Civil libertarians long warned that before giving government new powers, we should consider how an administration with authoritarian ambition might abuse them. We were told that America was too exceptional to elect such a person. Well here we are.
