New Turandot at Scottish Opera is one of the best things I’ve seen in AGES, one of the finest things McVicar has done, and makes a great case for the complete Alfano ending. Catch it if you can - it’s in Glasgow for three weeks then Edinburgh for two. It’s also a co-pro with Irish National Opera.

It is wholly obvious that when the men on the populist right talk of “protecting” women and children they really mean “exclusively owning and using as chattels”. Why are mainstream politicians and media so scared of pointing this out?

1) Same 2) Zoe is the first person I've seen refer to it as an incest comment rather than "sexism". But that was my instant reaction too. He's not just degrading her and being creepy, he's joking about a scenario of incestuous child abuse. That's not "banter", and it's not normal

Had another lovely meal today at Artusi in Peckham. Their 6pm early bird deal (£20 for bread and butter, big bowl of pasta (of the day - 2 choices), ice cream (of the day), and a house wine/beer/soft drink) is one of my favourite things, and usually available to book same day.

I know it’s a privilege to be able to spend £20 (plus service) whenever I need to say “fuck it, somebody else is going to make sure I get fed today”, but it’s SUCH good value for money.

And while I think you’d get some repeat menu items if you went multiple times in the same week, I’ve been going here every 3-4 weeks for the last few months (since I became aware of the early bird deal, which launched last year) and have never had the same main course or dessert twice.

"Opera doesn't make money. Opera’s what you spend money *on*.” “But . . what do you get out of it?” “You get opera. You put money in, you see, and opera comes out,” said Salzella wearily. --Terry Pratchett, 'Maskerade'

I’ve been doing some digging into if and when Cardiff Singer of the World 2027 is happening, and it seems that it’ll be in September rather than June, and with a raised age limit which accounts for people who would have missed out forever as a result of the postponement of the 2025 competition.

I’m a bit shocked by how far from sold out the Royal Opera’s new Parsifal, which opens tomorrow, is. In years past it would have been a guaranteed sell-out throughout the run. Perhaps there is in fact a ceiling on what people can/will pay for tickets.

Predictably, ENO has realised that they can’t sell their new opera at a bottom ticket price of £25 inc fees (up from a bottom price last season of £10 plus fees) after all. I get that ticket-price setting is a fine art, but ENO seems to get it wrong time after time.

(Further context: I have already paid £25 for my ticket for Angel’s Bone, but not for a shitty uncomfortable Balcony seat that was originally £25 full price. I got a London Theatre Week deal at that price on a much better seat whose RRP was £53.)

It was lovely to see the church so full for Choral Evensong last night, but I’m not going to pretend it was because of our singing! (I stayed for the talk too - it was really interesting.)

Thank you to all who joined us for Choral Evensong with Tudor music followed by a fascinating lecture on Tudor spies connected to the parish by Sally Gibbins, live performances and even an Enigma machine!! Read more: saintolave.com/index.php/20... #TudorHistory #StOlave #CityofLondon

As a regular 42 user I’m really torn about this. Sometimes it’s the perfect bus, but too often it involves being stuck in traffic at length on Tower Bridge Road. This could be a good thing 🤷🏻‍♀️

This weekend is the last chance to take part in TfL's consultation on plans to curtail the 42 bus route in Tooley Street, reducing the number of buses crossing Tower Bridge haveyoursay.tfl.gov.uk/42-bus-toole...

When "white sauce" in fish pie Contains cheese, it’s a lie. That’s a mornay.

Anon Opin@anonopin.bsky.social

I hate it when food presenters describe a white sauce with cheese in it as a béchamel. It's not. A béchamel is a simple white sauce. Add cheese and it's a mornay. But let's not using the French words and just call one a plain white sauce and the other a cheese sauce.

It’s noticeable that, wherever Ed Milliband is involved, he seems to just get on with quitely and competently making things a little better than they were.

I want the Prime Minister to look into a TV camera and say the RNLI are heroes, that we do not change policy by street violence in this country, and that he expects any criminal action to face the full force of the law. That's it. That's all he has to do.

Watching this show isn’t going to get you cancelled, you won’t lose your job, you won’t be tied to a flagpole in your underwear. It just makes you a shitty person, contributing to the wealth of a bigoted monster, against the request of the people she’s harming.

The Verge@theverge.com

As a new Harry Potter trailer makes the rounds, it bears repeating that there’s no way to watch this show without supporting J.K. Rowling’s bigotry and the structural violence she’s inflicting on the trans community.

You'd think "My parents didn't have government-run healthcare and I was orphaned at 12" would be an argument for more healthcare provision, not less.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

these people booing sound like literal sheep as Darline Graham criticizes Dr. Annie Andrews for supporting "government-run healthcare" before bragging of her parents that "if they were sick, they had to get up and go to work...my mother passed away when I was 11 and my father just over a year later"

God BLESS Elza van den Heever for completely forgetting the words of Zueignung (I do love a game of “which of the three ubiquitous Richard Strauss encores for soprano and orchestra will we get tonight”) in front of a full Royal Albert Hall and international broadcast audience. Well recovered 💖

It’s my final country house opera trip of the summer - Die Entführung at Glyndebourne - and what a pleasantly temperate summer’s day on which to make it, even in spite of there still being no direct trains to Lewes. Planned as a solo trip, but fortuitously coinciding with friends 😎

Well, that’s new. There’s a man on my District Line train busking ‘Jerusalem’ on a harmonica. He’s missing some of the correct semitones so it’s a bit… modal. Also he’s getting the first and second verse rhythms confused.

Sang Choral Evensong in Westminster Abbey. Went to a ravishing Lied von der Erde at the Proms. Acquired all of tomorrow’s Glyndebourne picnic components heavily reduced to clear at Gloucester Road Waitrose. A successful day!

In a The Producers-level slapstick physical comedy development, another alto has not quite “broken a leg” but is similarly indisposed… as a result of which I have a couple of TINY solos at Westminster Abbey in tomorrow’s Choral Evensong.

Lest anyone think I’m one of those Brits who’s always moaning about the weather and is impossible to please: this. This weather is exactly my kind of summer weather. It properly rained earlier, and now it’s sunshine & clouds with a bit of a breeze. Lovely.

I just knew we'd get this bollocks. Farage - like the Telegraph- doesn't want progress or anything to improve he just wants Britain to sit in a miserable slump in which he can holler constantly about "migrants" and drink pints in slow motion videos with people who pine for WW2.

Even accepting the premise that AI produces useful writing (which no one should), using AI in education is like using a forklift at the gym. The weights do not actually need to be moved from place to place. That is not the work. The work is what happens within you.

Farage's by-election stunt wasted enough public money to pay for free dental care for every child in his constituency. Does he care? No. He just wanted to avoid legitimate parliamentary scrutiny of his dodgy bungs. Which he won't. It'll start again immediately. What a cock.

Was not actually planning on watching the eclipse. Then stepped outside my block and the weird shadows were very cool. No way of safely actually LOOKING at the eclipse, so may wait until the optimum moment (92% in about 5 minutes from now) and then flash the briefest of glances.

Read the Facebook comments written by Sandie Peggie, the transphobic & racist nurse currently being championed by TERFs. Then ask yourself: if you were a person with Pakistani heritage and you were in hospital, would you feel happy & confident being looked after by this woman?

One of the less appealing things about living within earshot of Central London is when you can hear Big Ben in the distance, counting the hours of your insomnia 🙉 (The wind must have been blowing exactly the right way, as I could even hear the quarter-chimes, which is unusual!)
