Trump says of Somalia that "all they have is people that shoot you all the time ... it's a shit house country"

I wrote about You Can See Everything for Twin Cities Geek. Easily the best film so far this year. It’ll be in the running for best of the decade.

For the love of God, stop saying this regime's ruthless authoritarianism "raises questions" and start telling us what answers you have for us. If you can't do that, get the fuck out of the way.

Amy Klobuchar@amyklobuchar.com

The timing of this raid and reports that a White House official was involved raise serious questions that should concern all Americans, regardless of political party.

I keep trying to think of any historical example where a given technology's PROMOTERS AND TRUE BELIEVERS were like 'we are absolutely going to ruin your fucking life so be prepared like it's the end of the world'

ya i mean i do genuinely think that one of hegseth's goals is to drive people appalled by barbarity out of the military, because the long term plan is to make the military shoot at us, and the same guys who object to this won't do that either.

I wrote this mixed-positive review of the first six episodes of Seven Havens.

I just had a true millennial experience. Watched an episode of Bluey, then listened to an AJJ song, and they made me feel roughly the same thing.

If you are a causal watcher and you hear people saying this, and no pushback, you assume its true. No wonder people are mad. But in reality, this is what the actual evidence, still on the CDC website, says: www.cdc.gov/covid/vaccin...

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

WHAT -- Rep. Lisa McClain totally makes shit up, claims "82% of women who got the vaccine in their first or second trimester had a miscarriage"

Republicans are currently denouncing everyone in the Democratic Party as a “communist” and if you think Democrats firing at their left flank will make those attacks *less likely* and *less effective* you should try reading up on the history of McCarthyism

Beyond all the talk of scale and spectacle, Christopher Nolan's take on THE ODYSSEY ends up being a critical reframing of the story. One that thankfully eschews so many of the notions of western individualism - and remembers the tenets of Greek drama itself... www.patreon.com/filmcrithulk...

We’re a hair’s breadth from society ditching science and returning to human sacrifice and some guy made the world care about The Odyssey, history. and some big questions. I’m not saying you have to love it, but at least couch your complaints in the context of how remarkable that is.

Most movies would make for terrible books. Most books make for terrible movies. They are connected incidentally, which is why translations between the two almost never work. And when they do work, the original artist is usually pissed.

Christopher Nolan’s art is translating complex ideas for teenagers in Idaho. He’s better at it than any other person in the industry. He is successful because he understands which priorities to discard, and what couple of big ideas he will be able to communicate if he really doubles down.

It’s not that audiences are dumb. Most people are not brilliant, but they’re smarter than they think they are. From the Tolkiens with Peter Jackson to Stephen King with The Shining, there’s a long history of writers and literary types failing to adequately gauge the difference between mediums.

it continuously stuns me how rightwingers don't know how anything works at all on a systematic level so they assume nothing should be done about anything ever

This last weekend at the movies felt special, btw. My favorite film (I LOVE BOOSTERS) did the worst, but it's so cool that something as unique as Backrooms caught the public imagination. I haven't felt this kind of energy at the theater since Barbenheimer. It was fun to watch.

My ten favorite films #filmsky: - Apu Trilogy (pick one) - Frances Ha - The Last Detail - Bottle Rocket - The Fellowship of the Ring - The Matrix (because I'm too much of a coward to say Speed Racer) - Memories of Murder - No Country for Old Men - Sherlock Jr. - The Wind Rises

Alex Weston (he / him)@northbynorthweston.bsky.social

My 10 favorite films, off the top of my head: -Jurassic Park -The Third Man -Fantasia -The Big Lebowski -The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly -Raiders of the Lost Ark -The Kid (1921) -Alien -2001: A Space Odyssey -The Wrong Trousers #filmsky

Obviously not comprehensive. My heart & brain fought over a few dozen picks. Ultimately went with this criteria: What movies could I start right now at 3 AM, and not only stay awake but be genuinely bowled over, no matter how many times I've seen them. The above movies fit that criteria.

Pege Hegseth's chief of staff tried to block the promotion of a black female combat veteran because, as the article notes, "President Trump would not want to stand next to a Black female officer at military events" in Washington DC

Nicholas Grossman@nicholasgrossman.bsky.social

Explicitly, unambiguously racist, and part of a broader pattern. Not only unfair and insulting to these officers, and to all Black people serving the country, especially Black women, but bad for national security as well. Weakening America to prioritize a project of resegregating the government.
