A few countries are doing this. But I need to stress that it will only happen for a tiny fraction of US scientists who have lost funding or jobs. There are not enough jobs in the rest of the world combined. The impact of Donald Trump and Elon Musk will not be science moving, but less science. 🧪

Gutting federal research funding from America’s universities would not only dismantle the primary engine of scientific discovery in the United States, it would fundamentally change American science for generations to come. Article: zurl.co/sCa8E

Conservative ideology is rare at universities because it is an intellectual failure. It provides no useful insights and produces no technological advances. It failed. In the biggest free market for ideas ever created, the market chose the productive route of real scholarship and real research.

My comment on the USA Office of Management & Budget's proposal that unqualified political appointees be given life & death powers over scientific research grants that they do not & cannot understand:

"It is not appropriate for political appointees to have judgment over scientific grant applications. Such veto power over research results in the stultification of science & national prosperity (e.g. Stalin's Soviet Union & Hitler's Germany). The USA should learn from history, not repeat it."

"Political appointees have little or no scientific background & may hold views diametrically opposed to the body of well-proven evidence in science. They may sincerely believe that the world is flat, that Earth was created 5000 years ago, or that viruses and bacteria do not cause disease."

It’s truly astonishing to see how comprehensively the US government is tearing down every part of the system that has made it up until now a world-leading power in science, research, and technological development. The entire world will suffer from this wanton destruction.
