So, I'm about a year into my 3D printing journey, and I'm finally giving FreeCAD a thorough try. For anyone who doesn't know me, these are thoughts from someone who has done professional CAD design for a living for 20+ years. While I've mostly used 2D CAD, much of the same principles apply.

P.S. Dear #FreeCAD, including the Point-on-point constraint in the default constraints toolbar might be worth considering, too; I honestly use it far more often than perpendicular or tangent in most projects.

It always gets deleted when I get rid of unwanted, "extra" (from my POV) geometry. There are a few other annoyances; lack of auto-constraints on fillets and chamfers in a sketch, difficulty interacting with overlapping geometry (this may just be something I need to learn how to handle better), ...

and some visibility issues that need to be tweaked a bit in dark mode (at least, for someone in their late 40's who's been staring at computer screens as long as I have). But even with those in mind, I find #FreeCAD easier to use than Fusion, for me. I didn't think I'd ever see this in FOSS CAD.

There are a few pain points I would love to see change. The most frustrating from a regular CAD user's perspective is probably how an Offset command works in the sketcher with open lines / arcs / polylines. It always creates a closed wire, creating arcs where you offset a point if needed.

If there were a mode that only offset in a single direction like pretty much all other CAD software, it would save quite a bit of time. Half of the point of offset in 3D software is an automatic constraint for offset distance, and I've yet to be able to keep one on anything I've done...

While I've tried FreeCAD in the past, I gave up fairly quickly; it was far too difficult and frustrating to use, at least to someone used to a fairly user-friendly workflow. However, that has changed massively since the 1.0 release. It's often a bit clunkier and slower, but it is usable.

When I say "usable," I don't mean you can do simple things at a much slower pace. I mean I have yet to run into anything that took much longer to do than it would take in, say, Solidworks. (Well, minus a learning curve & Google searches, of course.)

Current events have led to a lot of folks reminiscing on the early days of the Covid pandemic, but those of us with Long Covid don't need the news to remind us - we live there every moment of every day. I can only hope that one day, we can look back wistfully, rather than sorrowfuly.

Dear Congress; Please do everything in your power to stop the genocidal madman from starting WW3. Thanks, Person who would really prefer that life as we know it doesn't cease to exist.

So relieved. My group got dismissed from jury duty, don't need to show up at all. What is normally a mild annoyance had me completely panicking thanks to Long Covid - between messed up sleep and fatigue, I was very worried about how things would go.

Very appropriate date, too, as I do often feel like I've been ambushed by a mob with knives.

For many living with #longCOVID & #mecfs, life is measured in energy, not time. Awareness is not only knowing long COVID & ME/CFS exist, it’s understanding the energy calculations people make every day. Support research. Clinical education. Equitable access to care. Importantly - believe them.

Ok, every advertisement I've seen for Stranger Things said new episodes are out "Christmas day," but it turns out they don't drop until 8pm. Seriously, wtf? That's "Christmas evening" at the very least.

Yeah, dragging people off the street because they're brown without knowledge of any crime or even checking for non-citizenship, totally fine and in no way can we ask "are the comparisons to Nazi Germany still unfair?"

As someone with Long Covid / extensive PEM, this applies to me, so please read this if you care at all about me.

Brutal truth: having a relationship with a person with ME requires a paradigm shift. - we will not meet you halfway, bc we can’t. I give what I can, when I can, and the other party must close the gap. It’s unfair and obnoxious. - we will often not back up our words with actions. Ex: I care

You know what's kinda funny - assuming this admin's despotic disposition remains matched by ineptitude - is that as a result of all their racist / anti-immigrant (potatoe, tomato) actions, including shutdown of much of government funding, you know what'll be necessary in the future? (1/2)

The U.S. will have lost so many bright & specialist minds, that if we plan on rebuilding what we lost, we'll need to open up more immigration from anywhere that can plug the gaps. If they don't manage to completely destroy our country as we know it, we'll probably have many more immigrants! (2/2)

I want to go to bed. I NEED to go to bed. But I'm double-trapped, so getting up is a Fel[i,o]n[e?]y. (No, I'm not making that into "correct" & matched regex, the pun is bad enough — and difficult enough to read — as-is.)
