Stop what you are doing and look at this lovely story. A photography student in the 80s took pictures of punks and mods on the street in Preston. He’s now tracked them down and photographed them again. The pictures and stories are really ❤️ www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Christopher Nevinson said of this work depicting Manhattan (1920) 'The painting directs us into the unknown, and there are no brakes... this painting forces us to confront it and not look away: welcome to your future at a thousand miles an hour, make of it what you will.'

One thing he says which I found interesting is that men in women IN GENERAL behave very differently together. I noticed some female colleagues who clearly hadn’t seen each other for a while *hug*, then say “How’s the baby? / “How’s so-and-so?” etc — all very feelings & relationships centred..

And yet, it is not liberation from a traditional narrative of feminine identity, more a reproduction of women’s role as mother (the mother is now the manager). What we don’t seem to be able to do is move beyond this gender binary entirely, which would require socialism.

Tbc, I’m not expressing a Fordist nostalgia. This male thing of mediating via things can be innocuous, as with my friends and I, but it can be really bad. This business of men getting together to rape a drugged wife - she’s the ‘thing’ that mediates the relationships. That’s the ‘hobby’.

These new very female-dominated corporate administration cultures are very premised on non-hierarchical values of ‘connecting’, ‘sharing’, ‘linking up’, having meetings and so on — a kind of female-code maternalism enlarged from the home to the state & corporation..

And in this world, I think many men don’t know what to do. They struggle to cope. It doesn’t come ‘naturally’ to them because of this preceding history. But there is a way in which post-Fordist networked capitalism does come more ‘naturally’ to women, right?..

And the militarism gets sublimated into computer games, action movies, rock bands, blah blah blah. Conversely, for centuries women were confined to the domestic sphere to provide unpaid labour for male workers, and also to produce more workers..

But that construction of female identity also continues to be culturally re-produced, such that the post-industrial information society has simultaneously enabled women to enter the labour market en masse while bearing the imprint of a traditional concept of femininity..

That is, we literally did mediate our relationships via things — the commodity produced from collective labour — or military conscription. Today, a lot of that has gone. Manufacturing has collapsed in the west, and people can be killed with drones or the press of a button…

However, rather like a wheel that is no longer being propelled but continues to spin, the internalisation of this gender identity continues on a cultural level. We no longer produce automotive parts so what do we do? We collect comics and records..

Secondly, I am not convinced this observable *general* difference reflects innate biological predispositions in men and women. And neither is it that us men are simply frightened of appearing gay — that is a crassly insufficient explanation imo..

The arguable explanation, to get into psychoanalytic Marxism (psycho-economics?) is that for centuries men did relate to each other through industrial labour or war. We worked together in factories and on assembly lines, or as soldiers..

..Men, on the other hand, IN GENERAL do not do this. We mediate our relationships through interests, hobbies. I started to reflect on my friends who I’ve know since school, and to this day, in our WhatsApp group, we 95% talk about music and movies..

..A while back one got divorced, and there was a brief bit of “Sorry man that sucks” / “If you want to talk…”, but in no time at all we were back to “Have you seen the latest Cohen bros?” Now, to be very clear, this is a generalisation. I know lots of women who are very focused on interests etc..

Capitalism has failed. It's such a shame that its replacement is feudalism based around a small group of techno-oligarchs.

It was repeatedly observed in the 2010s that politics had become a variety of sport (fandom, my enemy’s opponent is my friend etc) but I really feel like that has now run its course as a mode of explanation, beyond the specific online prisms where it was born.

Britain has grown ever more secular for 400 years. These guys are trying to import US Christianity which is a completely different bag (say what you will about US fundies but they’re true believers in a way hardly anyone here is, even the right who just perform belief as a cultural signifier).

Really worth noting that even in Red Wall constituencies which backed Leave, most *Labour* voters back rejoining the EU. Over 90% of Labour considerers back rejoin - opposition to EU membership is mainly coming from non-Labour voters in these seats. Was on Times Radio yesterday making this point.

I looked up the original posts to get context, and it's because he's posting about an Eastern European Heritage Reception at Gracie Mansion, which is a tradition started by Eric Adams a few years ago. It's the most anodyne "we are all a great melting pot" posting you can possibly imagine.

Human beings are a bit like coyotes in that they can operate both on their own in groups, but on social media, the computer scientist Jaron Lanier says, the ‘pack switch’ is flipped. Anyone who doesn’t fit with the pack is turned on or ostracised. This is true in rw spaces & lw spaces.

Just been told, by a white person, that race is scientifically real & that I should listen to the indigenous folk wisdom of non-white people and that this is progressive. No, I’ll read black intellectuals like Fanton, Douglass and Barbara Fields not do some racist noble savage bullshit thanks.

There are times on here when I’m not quite sure of the difference between a reactionary worldview and a ‘progressive’ one. What the fuck is ‘inigeneity’? Do we really want to go down a blood and soil route hmm? Callipers but WOKELY.
