seriously though, the arXiv listing this morning absolutely *honks* of data centre. And it's only getting worse from here.

everything Trump touches dies, and Putin is well-known for offering the tea/balcony dichotomy, so I expect Orban's days are strictly numbered

just musing on the phenomenon of "Harry Potterification", whereby a historic city is taken over by an insidious parasitic fungal growth of schoolboy-wizard knick-knack shops until nothing remains but wand-shops selling wands to potion shops and vice versa.

I think casework is really important, and that local constituency offices should be properly resourced with staff (by the state) to do it. The MP should oversee this - and, sure, take the credit when it makes a tangible difference - but it should not take up a large chunk of the MP's time.

Replying in a quote because it’s an interesting thread. Basically, I firmly disagree. It’s ineffective altruism. Lawmakers are powerful and can do big things and should focus on that. Indeed if they did that, there would (or should) be fewer problems to mop up!

University of Nottingham, right now, is cutting 560 jobs. Do we need to rebrand universities as very large, very clean, land-based oil rigs to get government support?

Leo Hickman@leohickman.carbonbrief.org

From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.

it must all be going well, because the US are pulling out their embassy staff and families from Saudi

Jack Saundrs@jacksaundrs.bsky.social

Is it not quite expensive to ineffectually tool around Yemen blowing up men in trucks for the Saudis? It's just, I was under the impression that our poor brave boys were very underfunded right now and that was why we needed to starve disabled people.

😱 suspended from the party? how about banged up in a maximum-security wing?

Henry Dyer@direthoughts.com

Jack Ross, CEO of Turning Point UK and a former Conservative election candidate, has been suspended from the party in the wake of undercover sting by Al Jazeera reportedly showing him discussing the cost of hiring contract killers. Story from @benquinn75.bsky.social and me

one last hit, bro. Just give me one last hit, and then I'll get clean

James Murray@james-bg.bsky.social

The problem is not really Jackdaw, which is pretty small. The problem is the UK's plan to transition away from fossil fuels is still not ambitious and detailed enough. The problem is if Rosebank follows. The problem is if every country develops one last fossil fuel project we're all screwed.

abysmal abuse to the cast of a play, received in Chichester and Brighton, correctly understood as a consequence of the drip-feed of hate in the UK media that feeds on X and algorithms

today I learnt that Times Higher Education had been taking money from Orban's Hungary since 2024. Phil Baty, THE’s chief global affairs officer, announced the link with Hungary’s former Culture and Innovation Ministry, created by former PM Orbán. That agreement has been terminated since Magyar won

this is next-level municipal socialism (complimentary) and so I hope Mayors and local governments across the UK are paying attention to how it could be done ...

Trump: “I'm waiting for accolades from the press, and they said, “what about the cost of beef?” Boeuf? You know what boeuf is? Expensive beef. When you go to a French restaurant. It's boeuf. Those are stupid people.

i just never thought the future would be so damn stupid

this is a really lovely suggestion, but any picture frame that suddenly changes its aspect in my presence will be moved to the toilet windowsill or placed face down in the bin

If you’re Christmas shopping and are stuck, let me tell you the loveliest thing I have bought recently: a digital picture frame. The latest ones can store and display thousands of photos and it’s a way of enjoying all the gazillions of pictures we take and don’t print. Perfect gift for anyone.

Trump has already tried to overthrow democracy once, and obviously will do so again this time around -- now with the backing of nearly every billionaire and tech-bro.

Mark Jacob@markjacob.bsky.social

“Do you think that Trump is attempting to overthrow democracy?” I asked. “Because I do, and think it’s obvious that he is. And I think that the fact that mainstream media won't say it makes it more likely that it’s going to happen.”

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

It works like this: 1. Home Office, without warning or explanation, begins refusing more visas from a particular country 2. This raises visa refusal rate for unis recruiting from that country 3. If overall refusal rate goes over 10%, uni loses visa licence = bankruptcy. Therefore…2/?
